Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Victorious In WPIAL Opening Rounds

The Riverside Panthers baseball team and the Ellwood City Wolverines softball team each earned opening round victories Tuesday. #5 seeded Riverside knocked off Chartiers-Houston in the Class 2A first round while the #4 seed Wolverines defeated Beaver Falls in the WPIAL Class 3A softball playoffs first round. EC Boys Tennis Wraps Up Season With Victory; EC Softball Suffers First Defeat

The Ellwood City boys tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a victory Thursday afternoon while the Wolverines softball team suffered its first defeat of its regular season earlier in the week.  Also, the Riverside Panthers baseball team cruised to a 22-0 victory over Summit Academy. PHOTOS: Harper Tosses 3-Hitter, Panthers Shutout Wolverines

Panthers starter Ronnie Harper pitched a gem Thursday, twirling five shutout innings as Riverside easily blanked the visiting Wolverines 10-0. Harper allowed just three hits. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk. The Panthers, now 7-1 overall, secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the second inning. Hunter Garvin, Drake Fox, Madden Boehm, and Bo Fornataro, who all drove in runs in the second frame. Boehm slugged a second inning homerun en route to his four-RBI performance. Panthers Shut Out New Brighton, Coach Oliastro Sets Historical Mark

Three Panther pitchers combined to shut out New Brighton 6-0 Wednesday afternoon, earning the team its second victory of the young season and head coach Dan Oliastro a historical mark – 656 career victories, most in WPIAL History. After striking for the games first run in the fourth inning, Riverside slugger Bo Fornataro launched a homerun in the fifth inning to stake the host Panthers to a 2-0 advantage. Aaron Falk powered the Riverside Panthers to a 6-2 victory over Ellwood City Friday afternoon. Falk drove in runs with a single in the first, a double in the second, and a home run in the fifth inning. The Panthers jumped out to an early when Evan Burry collected a run scoring double in the first inning. Riverside staked claim to a 3-0 lead after the first frame and never looked back. In a rather successful afternoon for the local baseball and softball teams, Ellwood City baseball and softball teams both earned victories while the Riverside baseball team defeated Aliquippa handily. Wolverines Grab Lead In Fifth Inning For Victory Over Freedom Area Ellwood City bounced back from a four run deficit and stole the lead late, defeating Freedom 8-4 on the road Tuesday. The Riverside Panthers softball team will be welcomed with an onslaught of younger, talented players this year according to head coach Gerilynn Cummings. Riverside Panthers Varsity’s effort to come back from down four runs in the first inning came up just short, as they fell 6-5 to Brownsville on Tuesday. Riverside scored five runs in the failed comeback on a error in the first, a error in the first, and a single by Drew Speicher in the fifth. Riverside Varsity Will Advance to Next Round of WPIAL Playoffs

With a hard fought 3 to 1 victory, Riverside Baseball Team will advanced to the next round of the WPIAL Playoffs. Both teams were strong on the pitcher’s mound Monday, but Riverside Panthers Varsity defeated Steel Valley 3-1. Riverside  pitchers allowed just three hits to Steel Valley.
