Ellwood City Jr High Defeats New Castle

The Lady Wolverines beat New Castle Tuesday evening by a final score of 5-0. It was a hard fought well played game by both teams with Ellwood City outplaying the Red Hurricanes in the pitching and defense department.

Angie Nardone and Aliya Garroway combined on the seven inning shutout. Nardone got the win as she pitched the first four innings. She gave up just 3 hits. Garroway went the final three innings and yielded 1 hit. Each pitcher fanned 5 batters apiece and did not issue a walk.

The defense was phenomenal as they committed just 1 error. Second baseman Kyla Servick led the way by assisting on 3 ground ball outs. Third baseman Kali Barnett and pitcher Garroway each assisted on 2 ground ball outs. Shortstop Mollie Street, first baseman Grace Balin, and Nardone each assisted on 1 groundout. Pitcher Nardone made a tremendous diving catch on a pop up in front of home plate to end the third inning with a runner on third base.

The offense made efficient use of 4 hits, 4 walks, and 2 Red Hurricane errors. The Lady Wolverines got things started by plating two runs in the first inning. Servick and Garroway were on second and third by way of walks with two outs. They would score on a flyball by Balin that would get by the centerfielder. They would expand the lead to 3-0 in the second without a hit. Katelyn Wehman reached base on a one out walk and would advance to third on a terrific bunt by Jenna Vetica. Wehman would score on an errant pick off throw by the catcher. The Lady Wolverines made it 4-0 in the third inning by once again manufacturing a run. Barnett led off with a triple into the right field corner and would score on a sacrifice fly by Garroway. The fifth and final run would come across the plate in the 5th inning.
