EC Baseball Beats Laurel, Softball Blasts Beaver Falls

Both Ellwood City baseball and softball teams collected victories on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolverines baseball team defeated Laurel 10-8 at Sanders Field behind two doubles and a 4-RBI performance by catcher Jordan Keller. After Ellwood City posted three runs in the first inning, the Wolverines tacked on three more in the second inning as Keller doubled in a run and Aaron Lake smacked an RBI single. Lake finished with three singles and three RBIs on the afternoon. Ellwood City used a late rally, on the road, Monday to earn a 6-4 victory against unbeaten section foe Central Valley. After training 4-0 entering the top of the six inning, the Wolverines struck for four runs and added two more in the seventh to pull away to victory. Ellie Kalantzis connected on a pivotal home run in the sixth inning rally and Kiley LeViere singled in the frame to knot the score. Sara Schwarz drove in five runs to lead Ellwood City to a 10-8 road victory over New Castle on Tuesday. Ellwood City (5-0 Overall) built a seven run lead in the fifth inning and then held off a comeback attempt by the Red Hurricanes. Ellwood City and Riverside softball seasons are underway. Each team will look to return to their respective WPIAL class playoffs. Nine starters are back for Ellwood City and head coach Gary Rozanski is looking to improve in all aspects of the game. Ellwood City sophomore Will Nardone pitched six scoreless innings Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines easily dismantled the visiting Central Valley Warriors 10-0 at Sanders Field. Nardone allowed only three singles on the afternoon. He stuck out five batters while issuing only three walks. Both Ellwood City baseball and softball teams each rebounded from recent losses last week with victories over the weekend. The Lady Wolverines lost a heartbreaking 2-1 extra innings affair to its rival Riverside on Thursday, but rebounded to hand section foe Hopewell its first section loss on Friday. The Wolverines varsity softball team scored 15 runs for the second consecutive game – this time it took just three innings for the mercy rule to end things as they beat Beaver Falls 15-0 Wednesday evening. Ellwood City outfielder Lexi Beck capped a five run first inning attack with a two run double to left field scoring Keira Rozanski and Ellie Kalantzis. Wednesday evening’s game between Ellwood City and Mohawk at Stiefel Park had a playoff feel even though it was just the second section game for both squads. Both pre-season favorites to compete for the section crown entered the game with 0-1 section records and the winner would jump right back into the section race while the loser would be in a deeper hole. Both Ellwood City and Riverside softball teams will enter their 2023 regular season campaigns with sights set on returning to the WPIAL Playoffs, continuing streaks for both teams.
