Lady Wolverines Rally Late, Knock Off Central Valley 6-4

Ellwood City used a late rally, on the road, Monday to earn a 6-4 victory against unbeaten section foe Central Valley.

After training 4-0 entering the top of the six inning, the Wolverines struck for four runs and added two more in the seventh to pull away to victory.

Ellie Kalantzis connected on a pivotal home run in the sixth inning rally and Kiley LeViere singled in the frame to knot the score. Alexis Beck is credited with the game-winning RBI as she swatted a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to put Ellwood City ahead.

Amber McQuistion was stellar in the circle, ringing up 13 strikeouts across seven innings. She surrendered only singles in her victory, allowing four runs and three walks over the complete game. McQuistion also collected a team-high two hits, helping her own cause in the victory offensively.

Kalantzis finished with three RBIs on the afternoon while Julie Nardone collected three walks from her leadoff position in the lineup.

Aubrey Grater collected three hits and three runs for the Warriors (4-1 Overall) in defeat. Emma Weaver surrendered four hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Abigale Stewart who took the loss for Central Valley after the Wolverines rally.

Next up for the Lady Wolverines (7-1 Overall) is a home game Tuesday against the Hopewell Vikings at 5:30 p.m. at Stifel Park. Ellwood City will face the Warriors again later this month, April 29th at home.

WOLVERINES BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATED 6-1 AT HOME BY MOHAWK

After scratching out the game’s first run, Ellwood City could not hold off visiting Mohawk on Monday, falling 6-1 at Sanders Field in Ewing Park.

The Wolverines scored first in the second inning after Nate Kennedy was hit by a pitch, driving in the lone run for Ellwood City.

The section-leading Warriors (7-1 Overall, 5-0 Section 3A-1)struck in the fourth inning when JJ Nail singled scoring a run and Keigan Hopper collected a two-run double.

One run crossed in the fifth before two more runs put the game away in the top of the sixth inning for the visiting Warriors.

Mohawk starter Vinny Pezzuolo was sharp on the mound, allowing only three hits and one run across his five innings of work.

Will Nardone took the loss for Ellwood City, surrendering four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Joseph Roth collected a double offensively, one of only three hits on the afternoon for the Wolverines.

Ellwood City (3-5 Overall, 1-5 Section 3A-1) will look to quickly respond as they face the Warriors again on Tuesday afternoon at Mohawk with a first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
