Lady Wolverines Shutout McGuffey, Advance To WPIAL Semifinals

Amber McQuistion threw a shutout to lead Ellwood City past McGuffey 3-0 on Monday at North Allegheny High School. The pitching was strong on both sides. McQuistion struck out seven and allowed only three hits, while the Lady Highlanders starter sat down eight. The Wolverines jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kaylee Palombi doubled, scoring one run, and Taylor Hoffman singled, scoring two runs. Addison Drake and Saeryn Hoover each homered and drove in three runs as Riverside earned a 6-1 opening round victory over Brentwood in the WPIAL 2A Softball Playoffs. With her homerun Drake tied the Lady Panthers single season homerun record. A double by Saeryn Hoover helped open up the scoring with a run scoring double in the bottom of the first. Riverside Softball, Baseball Teams Each Qualify For WPIAL Playoffs That Begin Next Week

The Riverside girls softball team (8-5 Overall) has qualified for the Class 2A WPIAL Softball Playoffs, earning a #7 seed in the playoff picture. The Lady Panthers’ playoff journey will begin on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to West Mifflin High School to play #10 Brentwood. “We don’t know much about our opening round opponent, but we know us,” says head coach Geri Cummings. “We will be ready to compete next Thursday.” The coach is appreciative that the WPIAL committee put all four Section 2A-1 teams in different wings of the bracket and it gives everyone a chance…

Riverside junior Addison Drake hit two home runs and drove in three runs as the Lady Panthers defeated Neshannock 6-5 on Monday at Riverside. Drake’s second homer of the contest, a two-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the game winning hit as Riverside rallied. Drake finished a perfect 3-3 at the dish, scoring three runs and knocking in three runs. Panther Freshman right fielder Ava Cummings collected three hits in four at bats as the #11 seeded Riverside Lady Panthers defeated #3 seed Laurel Varsity Spartans 11-1 on Monday in the WPIAL Class 2A Quarterfinals. The upset victory avenged a pair of lopsided losses to the Spartans during the regular season. All three local teams competing Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs earned victories. RIVERSIDE 4 KEYSTONE OAKS 1 Hunter Garvin and Zack Hare combined for a no-hitter as top seeded Riverside earned a 4-1 victory over Keystone Oaks on Tuesday. Hare struck out nine batters on the afternoon but Keystone Oaks scored the games first run in the fourth inning without the aid of a hit. Ellwood City used a late rally, on the road, Monday to earn a 6-4 victory against unbeaten section foe Central Valley. After training 4-0 entering the top of the six inning, the Wolverines struck for four runs and added two more in the seventh to pull away to victory. Ellie Kalantzis connected on a pivotal home run in the sixth inning rally and Kiley LeViere singled in the frame to knot the score. Senior Samantha Rosenberger swatted a solo home run at the plate and struck out 15 Freedom Bulldogs on the mound Wednesday as the Lady Panthers defeated Freedom 8-4. Riverside raced out to an 8-0 advantage before the host Bulldogs gathered four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
