Lady Wolverines Shutout McGuffey, Advance To WPIAL Semifinals

Amber McQuistion threw a shutout to lead Ellwood City past McGuffey 3-0 on Monday at North Allegheny High School.

The pitching was strong on both sides. McQuistion struck out seven and allowed only three hits, while the Lady Highlanders starter sat down eight.

The Wolverines jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kaylee Palombi doubled, scoring one run, and Taylor Hoffman singled, scoring two runs.

Miley Main took the loss for McGuffey. The starting pitcher went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking six.

Hoffman led Ellwood City Varsity Wolverine with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The right fielder went 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Palombi also collected two hits for The Wolverines. Kiley Leviere earned two walks and McQuistion doubled.

Maura Janovich, Nicole Klages, and Courtney Bedillion each collected a hit for McGuffey in defeat.

#4 Ellwood City (10-5 Overall) next plays top seed South Park on Wednesday, May 20th at a site and time TBA. The Eagles (18-1 Overall) earned a third consecutive trip to the semifinals with a shutout of the #8 Avonworth on Monday while Ellwood City returns to the semifinals for a second consecutive year.

CLASS 2A PLAYOFFS

#7 Riverside was defeated 4-0 by #2 seed Chartiers-Houston on Monday in Peters Township.  Taryne Drilak tossed a complete game one-hitter for the Bucs. Ayla Sterner collected the lone hit for the Lady Panthers and was issued the loss as she allowed four runs in her three innings of work in the pitcher’s circle. Saeryn Hoover walked twice and Addison Drake also drew a free pass for Riverside in defeat.  Riverside defeated Brentwood last week in its opening round contest.
