Wolverines Fall Short In Season Opening Loss At Brentwood

Week Zero is officially in the books for the WPIAL as over 100 teams were in uniform during the Friday/Saturday action. The Wolverines made a trip down to Brentwood High School to take on the Spartans to begin the 2022 football campaign. Both teams in recent years have had a tough time on the gridiron, but the game did not disappoint. All-American Reisinger Returns For Nationally Ranked BC3 Volleyball Squad

Ellwood City graduate Breanna Reisinger headlines a group of decorates starters returning to the The Butler County Community College volleyball squad this fall. Two All-Americans, a middle hitter selected to a national championship all-tournament team, and three other starters who as first-year players in 2021 led the Pioneers to a 12th consecutive winning season and a sixth-place national finish. Outside hitter Reisinger and setter Morgan Jack in December became the first teammates in program history to be named National Junior College Athletic Association All-Americans following the same season. Ellwood City Co-Ed Golf Team is enjoying some early season success, collecting victories in its first two matches of the season. The Wolverines opened up the season with a home victory over Union on Friday (223-259) and collected another victory at home on Tuesday, defeating New Castle (214-256). Melfi Collected His First Delmar Golf Course Club Championship

The 62nd Annual Delmar Golf Course Club Championship was held August 6 and August 7, 2022. Brandon Melfi collected his first club championship with a two day total of even par 144 to win by a stroke over Sam Barry Jr. and three strokes over Broc Boariu and Mike Vucilich. Vucelich collected the A-Flight title and Carson Cappello captured the B-Flight championship by one stroke over Colten Crizer. Ellwood City’s Gino Biondi won the 21st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby. Biondi belted nine home runs to win the competition. Liam Connelly of West View/Ross Township and Tim McElhaney tied for second place with six home runs. Cam Mills of Ellwood City and Kaden Troung of West View/Ross Township smacked five home runs. Laurel defeated Ellwood City, 10-0, in the nightcap Thursday in the 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament at Freidhoff Field. Braydon Faulkner rapped three singles with five RBI and was the winning pitcher with three hitless innings. Laurel opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Gino Biondi led Ellwood City to a 5-4 win over Shaler in the nightcap of the 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament on Tuesday night. The victory will advance Ellwood City to next play Laurel on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday, Biondi slashed an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie to give Ellwood City the winning margin. 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic Begins Monday

The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season. Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. PIAA Playoffs: Panthers Fall To Neshannock In Extra Innings

Thursday’s game at against Neshannock was a heartbreaker for the Riverside Panthers, as they lost an early lead, could not capitalize late, and end up on the losing end of the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal contest in extra innings. The Riverside Panthers got out to a five-run lead in the fourth inning and held on for a 5-3 victory over District 6 champion Mount Union on Monday in the opening round of the PIAA Class-2A Playoffs.
