Berglund Qualifies For PJW States, Shriver Qualifies For Regionals

Two Ellwood City wrestlers have qualified for upcoming wrestling tournaments this weekend. Junior high wrestler Cheyenne Berglund (96 pounds) will compete in the 9th Annual PA Junior High State Championship Tournament in Johnstown, PA this weekend after a qualifying performance last weekend. “Cheyenne has grown over the year and is highly intelligent and is picking up more technique, she has had an excellent season.” says coach John Fleming. “She’s willing to add moves to her arsenal and I feel that will really help her growth in this sport.” For Berglund, this will be a second go-round at states as she…

McClure Captures District 7 AA Sectional Championship

Wolverine freshman wrestler Gavin McClure earned a 1st place finish in his 133-pound weight class at the 2023 WPIAL AA Eastern Sectionals held at Greensburg Salem High School this past Saturday. With the performance McClure qualifies for the WPIAL Class-2A Wrestling Individual Championships to be held on February 24-25 at Chartiers Valley High School. Deer Lakes Downs Wolverines In WPIAL Opening Round

The Ellwood City Boys Basketball was downed by the Deer Lakes Lancers 76-57 Monday evening in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs. The Riverside Boys Swimming Team has collected their fifth consecutive section championship and will next turn its focus to the WPIAL Swimming Championships scheduled for March 2-3 at the Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Ellwood City avenged a January loss to rival Riverside Friday night, collecting a 56-41 victory and clinching a playoff berth. This time they had the services of junior big man Joseph Roth, but it was another Wolverine starter that propelled the visiting Wolverines to victory Will Nardone entered Friday’s contest averaging under five points per contest, but the sophomore erupted for 21 points including more made 3-pointers (five) than his season average in points. The Ellwood City girls basketball team fell 56-26 Thursday night to the section leading Laurel Spartans as part of their Senior night festivities. Liz Mihalko, Brooke Roth, and Aliya Garroway were the three Ellwood City girls basketball seniors recognized in advance of the game. Claire Noble led the Wolverines on the court Thursday with a team-high 11 points while seniors Roth (6 points) and Mihalko (2 points) each collected points in their final home game. Ellwood City and Riverside will have a playoff berth on the line Friday when the two teams square off in their Riv-Ell rematch. This after Ellwood City used a 35-point scoring outburst by junior Joseph Roth to hold on and defeat Beaver Falls 57-51 Tuesday night at Lincoln High School. Lady Wolverines Complete Sweep Of Rival Panthers

Sophomore Caitlin Kreitzer scored a career high 18 points to lead the Lady Wolverines to a 52-33 road victory over Riverside on Monday evening. The victory capped a season sweep in the Riv-Ell series as Ellwood City earned a home victory earlier in January. On Monday, Kreitzer, who connected on two 3-pointers, was among three Wolverines in double figures. Interested in trying Soccer? The Ellwood City Soccer Boosters are hosting a FREE clinic for Ellwood City and Shenango students (including Cyber, Charter and Lincoln Park) currently in 8th-11th grade on Sunday, February 26, 2023. The clinic will be held at the Lincoln High School big gymnasium and will be led by BC United coaches and staff.  It is open to both male and female student athletes.
