Fluharty, Sturgeon Earn 1st Place Finishes At MAC Track & Field Championships

Riverside’s Lexi Fluharty and Ellwood City’s Delaney Sturgeon each took home a 1st place finish in their respective event at the MAC Championships on Wednesday at Shenango High School.

Fluharty, a junior, turned in a personal record time of 11:38.39 in the Girls 3200m Run to capture 1st place, shattering a 25-year-old school record in the process. Fluharty also finished 4th place in the 1600m Run with a time of 5:23.46. Fluharty swept the two distance running events at the Beaver County Track & Field Championships earlier this month.

Fellow junior runner Brooke Wissinger took 4th place in the 3200m Run (12:14.28) and 6th place in the 1600m Run (5:38.95).

“Those girls can run,” exclaimed coach Deb Evans.

Junior Carlee Crawford had a pair of fourth place finishes in her three field events. Crawford posted a toss of 101’8″ in the Girls Discus Throw and a toss of 103’10” in the Girls Javelin Throw. Crawford also placed 9th in the Girls Shot Put with a mark of 30’9.75″

For Ellwood City, Delaney Sturgeon backed up her performance at the SRU ‘Rock Relays’ Invitational last weekend with another first place finish in the girls high jump. The 5’10” sophomore posted a mark of 5’0.5″ to take 1st place.  Sturgeon also placed 8th overall in the girls long jump with a mark of 16’1.5″

Junior Nick Franitti placed 5th in the Boys 110m Hurdles with a time of 16.41

Junior Reece Sullivan placed 2nd in the Boys Pole Vault at 12’4″ while fellow junior Owen Glover finished in 6th place at 10’4″. Sullivan finished behind a first place mark of 12’10”

Sophomore Gavin Lutz placed 4th in the Boys 300m Hurdles with a time of 43.23

In relay action, Ellwood City finished 4th Overall in the Boys 4x800m Relay. The relay team of Nick Wise, Bradley Custer, Drew Steffler, and Colten Crizer finished with a time of 8:29.21

The Moon Area boys team took first place with 57 points in 18 scored events while Laurel took first place as a team in the girls championship with 81 points in 18 scored events.

OF NOTE: The Riverside Girls Track & Field Team has qualified for the 2023 WPIAL Class 2A Track & Field Championships that will begin May 2nd. The Lady Panthers begin in a four team pod – Winchester Thurston, Greensburg C.C., Brownsville, and Riverside – that competes at Greensburg C.C. HS at 3:30 on May 2nd. A WPIAL 2A Champion will be crowed at the finals on Tuesday, May 9th at Peters Township High School.

“This team [Riverside] is very unique, and it’s ability to be adaptable and flexible,” says coach Evans. “It is a very young team and a deep team. They have worked extremely hard collectively and they certainly work with the team concept.”
