Sturgeon Captures 1st Place In High Jump At ‘Rock Relays’ On Saturday

Sophomore Delaney Sturgeon captured a 1st place finish in the Girls High Jump at the Slippery Rock University “Rock Relays” on Saturday.

The high school invitational took place at the William Lennox Track at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium with teams from more than 40 high schools across the region participating.

Sturgeon earned the top podium spot with a final jump of 5’0″ that bested six other athletes who all finished tied at 4’10”.

Sturgeon also finished 3rd in the Pole Vault (8’0″) and 5th in the Long Jump (15’10”).

Just last week, Sturgeon finished 1st overall in the high jump, 2nd overall in the long jump, and fourth overall in the pole vault at the Beaver County Track & Field Championships.

A tandem of Laurel Spartens placed 1-2 in the pole vault while sophomore Sara Roe from Shenango took 1st place in the long jump with a 17’1.5″ mark.

Ellwood City juniors Colten Crizer (2:04.57) and Nick Wise (2:05.19) finished 5th an 6th place respectively in the boys 800m run. Kevin Sherry of Coudersport finished 1st place in the 800m run with a time of 2.00:60 and also placed 1st overall in the 1600m and 3200m runs.

For Riverside, senior Joe Reed placed 2nd overall int he Boys Javelin with a final throw of 160’5″. He was bested by a throw of 162’4″ by McDowell senior Christian Santiago. Carlee Crawford finished 5th overall in the Girls Shot Put with a toss of 30’9″ and Delana Fox finished 8th overall in the girls javelin with a throw of 92’1″.

Reed had previously set a Beaver County Track and Field Championship record distance in the javelin toss last week.

On the track, a pair of Panthers took 6th place in their respective events. Junior Brooke Wissinger placed 6th overall in the Girls 1600m run with a time of 5:41.61 and sophomore Gavin Lutz finished 6th overall in the BOys 300m Hurdles with a time of 44:86.
