PIAA Playoffs: Panthers Fall To Neshannock In Extra Innings

Thursday’s game at against Neshannock was a heartbreaker for the Riverside Panthers, as they lost an early lead, could not capitalize late, and end up on the losing end of the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal contest in extra innings.

The game was tied at four with Neshannock batting in the top of the eleventh when Jake Rynd singled on a 2-2 count, scoring the game winning run to advance the Lancers to the PIAA semifinals.

Riverside took an early lead in the second inning, scoring four runs to stage its early advantage.   Neshannock starting pitcher Cam Foy walked Hunter Garvin with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run. Sean Hayes was hit by a pitch, driving in a second run and Madden Boehm followed with a two-run single for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Neshannock tied things up at four when Grant Melder doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.

Riverside left runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings and had multiple chances to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but could not capitalize.

Giovanni Valentine got the win for Neshannock. The hurler surrendered zero runs on two hits over three innings, striking out one. Dom Cubellis and Jacob Walzer entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Garvin took the loss for Riverside. The lefthander lasted five innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out five and walking zero. Ronnie Harper started the game for Riverside. Harper went four and a third innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out four and walking zero.

Riverside (17-7 Overall) racked up nine hits on the afternoon with a four-hit performance by Boehm (4-7, 2 RBIs) leading the way. Ashton Schlosser and Bo Fornataro each collected two hits offensively.  The Panthers drew 13 walks as a team but left 18 runners on base in its defeat.

Neshannock had nine hits in the game. Rynd and Melder each managed multiple hits for the Lancers.  Neshannock (19-7 Overall) advances to play Burgettstown on Monday, June 13 at a site to be determined.
