Council: No Events to Be Charged and Cost Estimates Greatly Reduced

During its meeting on Monday, council voted to allow all requested events in 2018 at no charge. In edition, the estimated borough costs for events provided last week was recalculated at significantly lower rates. In February, council announced the Ellwood City Relay for Life would be charged $550 to recoup borough expenses and that all other borough events would be required to pay borough expenses. Local Author Plans Book Signing

Local author Nancy K. Wallace is celebrating the publication of her third and final book in the Wolves of Llisé trilogy with a book-signing event at the Ellwood City Library on Friday, March 23, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Pittsburgh Steelers to Play Basketball Game at Lincoln High School

For the first time in several years, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing a basketball game at Lincoln Junior Senior High School. The LHS Caring Team is sponsoring the event in which current and former members of the Pittsburgh Steelers will play against a team of Ellwood City Area School District faculty members and some players from this year’s boys basketball team. Mayor’s Advisory Committee Monthly Meeting Recap

On March 8, 2018 the Mayor’s Advisory Committee met in Council Chambers. The Mayor stressed the importance of being aware of your surroundings especially at night, to combat crime. Discussed was the possibility of hiring another Police Officer.  The Mayor advised that the Borough is employing many ways to attack crime, preventive measures.  Some of these preventive measures have led to many drug arrests, 422 since Court has taken office.  One of the new measures is “Perception is Everything” and commands immediate attention. Police: New Castle Man Charged with Viewing Child Pornography

According to the criminal complaint filed on March 6, Steven Robert Nerone, 35, of 1704 E Washington St, New Castle, was charged with dissemination of child pornography. In February 2017, state police investigated a report from Microsoft that a Skype user had uploaded a known picture of child pornography. State police requested a subpoena to be issued to Comcast for an IP address identification. The Comcast report identified the IP user as Nerone. In October, police obtained a search warrant and interviewed the suspect. In December, police seized Nerone’s hard drive and thumb drive and located over 450 pictures and…

Ellwood Historical Society Monthly Meeting Recap

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society monthly membership meeting was held last Monday, March 12, 2018. Guy Prestia, a World War II Veteran led the Pledge to the American flag. Those in attendance were reminded of the annual Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships.  Two (2) $1500.00 scholarships will be awarded at the May meeting.  Graduating students from Lincoln High and Riverside High Schools are eligible.  Applications may be obtained from the Guidance Counselors of the schools.  The scholarships have been awarded through the Historical Society since the year 1999. Chamber of Commerce, Other Organizations Urge Council to Reconsider Charging Events

The Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce took issue with council’s decision to charge nonprofits recoup fees for events held in the borough. At Monday’s Ellwood City Borough Council agenda meeting, chamber President Ray Santillo urged council to reconsider. Santillo argued that events such as Relay for Life and the Concert Series promote a healthy local economy and urged council to compromise and solve problems amicably while marketing the community positively.
