Calvin Presbyterian Church Awards Scholarships

Calvin Presbyterian Church recently awarded scholarships to Margaret Behm, Caylin Owens and Alex Vardzel.  Each student was awarded $3,300. Margaret, daughter of Jay and Jennifer Behm, and granddaughter of Judy Brooks, will be studying Early Education with a minor in Special Education.  She received the Dorothy McElroy Scholarship. Caylin, daughter of Tina McAllister, and granddaughter of Dolly and Ed McAllister, is in her third year in the Biology and Pre-Physician’s Assistant program, and will continue after graduation to obtain a degree as an Anesthesia Assistant.  She received the Calvin Church Scholarship. Evan Westlund Wins Ellwood City 2018 Beautification Award

On Monday, Mayor Anthony J. Court was honored to present to Evan Westlund of Mt. Vernon Drive, Ellwood City, the 1st 2018 Beautification Award Winner with a Yard Sign and a Gift Certificate at a local restaurant. This is the 2nd time Evan has been nominated and presented with this Award, once in 2013 at a previous address on Wampum Avenue and now at his Mt. Vernon Drive residence. Ellwood City School District On New Pennsylvania Required Prevention Program

In April, Ellwood City School’s attended the Blueprints Conference at Penn State University. The conference presented a slideshow focusing on new required opioid education for Pennsylvania students grades 6-12 on prevention, risk, protective factors and effective prevention of the opioid epidemic. Ellwood City received a 5-year grant for Life Skills Training in 2013. The grant allowed the school to further implement a prevention program to its students. LST is a Blueprints program that is part of the grant ECASD received from the University of Colorado, Center for the Prevention on Violence. Ellwood City Summer Playground Program 2018

The Ellwood City Playground Program begins on Monday, June 11. Children must be between the ages of 5-13 and must be Ellwood City Borough residents. A parent or guardian must accompany their child to register them for the program. The bus will NOT be picking children up the first day of the program, June 11, to ensure that parents will come with their child to complete the registration form. Kyle Smith is Awarded Direct Appointment From USAFA

Kyle Douglas Smith the son of Doug and Joanne Smith, from Lincoln High School recently was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) as a direct appointment.  This is an extremely selective program where only an approximate 1,400 students out of 25,000 applicants nationwide are afforded this offer.  This education is valued at over $425,000 along with an Air Force commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force upon graduation. “This is a rather prestigious honor and reflects very favorably on both Kyle and the educational program at Lincoln High School,” said Richard J Conwell, deputy liaison officer. Ellwood City Hospital Gets a Face Lift, New Generation of Doctors to Come

Ellwood City Medical Center has big changes on the horizon with new staff, new construction, new hospital units and technology being implemented. The hospital will become a medical sanctuary for area residents. When the hospital switched to new ownership in 2017 there were necessary layoffs made to promote hospital growth. Still remaining are many familiar veteran nurses and doctors. Neisa M. Carsele and Zoe Maria Kalantzis, high honor graduates in Lincoln High School’s 2018 class, have added their names to the list of winners of the LHS 1957 class scholarship. Carsele received the annual $5,000.00 scholarship along with a special award of $500.00 For the best essay. She will enroll in the division of undergraduate studies for biology at Penn State University. Kalantzis was given a $2000.00 scholarship. PHOTOS: Relay For Life

Many attended the Ellwood City’s “Be A Superhero” Relay for Life  Saturday on Lawrence Avenue. There was a “Chalk the Town” sidewalk art contest The included food, crafts and vendors along with musical entertainment. One Voice, Average Jane, Elvis Vaughn Hudspath, The’m Guys and Nickle Plated Revolver performed throughout the day at the relay. There was also a performance from the young dancers at Diamond Dance Academy. The evening wrapped up with a Luminara Dedication Ceremony, where decorated luminary bags were lit and lined Lawrence Avenue. Below is a gallery of images from the Relay for Life:
