Concetta E. “Connie” Manzo, 94

Mrs. Concetta E. “Connie”  Manzo, 94, of Ellwood City, passed away early Friday morning on June 22, 2018 at the Butler Memorial Hospital. Connie was born on March 3, 1924 in Ellwood City to the late Antonio Nocera and Antoinette (DiCerbo) Nocera. She is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1942. Connie married Emmett Manzo on August 22, 1946. She is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish and the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers. Connie was a devoted mother and an excellent housewife, an occupation in which she took great pride. She had a passion for canning,…

Ellwood City Area Public Library Activities for Week of June 25, 2018

Activities taking place at the Ellwood City Area Public Library include the following: Monday, June 25, at 10:00 a.m. — “Coloring for Adults,” a weekly program that is free and open to the public. This program is usually held on Wednesdays, but will meet on Monday mornings instead during the summer months. “Coloring for Adults” is a program designed to help reduce the stresses of everyday life. Adult Dance Pool Party Ewing Park

The Ellwood City Council Parks and Recreation Committee is having a Adult Dance Pool Party at Ewing Park on Monday, June 25, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The theme of the party is oldies and DJ Franko will be playing music from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. People are welcome to dance, mingle, swim or relax and enjoy the music. The concession stand will be open for those attending the event. There is a $5 admission fee. Calvin Presbyterian Church Awards Scholarships

Calvin Presbyterian Church recently awarded scholarships to Margaret Behm, Caylin Owens and Alex Vardzel.  Each student was awarded $3,300. Margaret, daughter of Jay and Jennifer Behm, and granddaughter of Judy Brooks, will be studying Early Education with a minor in Special Education.  She received the Dorothy McElroy Scholarship. Caylin, daughter of Tina McAllister, and granddaughter of Dolly and Ed McAllister, is in her third year in the Biology and Pre-Physician’s Assistant program, and will continue after graduation to obtain a degree as an Anesthesia Assistant.  She received the Calvin Church Scholarship. Ellwood City Kitchen Cabinet Event Thursday June 21

Ellwood City Kitchen Cabinet is hosting a very casual event on Thursday night at 6:30 in the Municipal Building. The purpose of the meeting is to share ideas of any interested group or person on what people can do to help Ellwood City grow and prosper. The meeting will be a baseline for those interested in helping Ellwood move forward by sharing their ideas and how they might be implemented.

The 10th Annual PBC Community Carnival

The date of the next carnival is July 7, 2018 and will be held on the church grounds from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The church hosts this day to provide free fun for the community, to get the community involved with each other, help local businesses and many families within the community. The event is free to the community. Entrance will be a household item such as a roll of paper towels, toilet paper, wipes, cleaning products, laundry soap, toiletries etc. No food or toothbrushes please.The items collected will go to local families in need. Riverside School Board Votes to Reorganize Food Service Positions

The Riverside School Board voted Monday to reorganize the current 19 food service positions into 15. One cafeteria worker has decided to retire and three are moving to different part-time positions in the district. According to Shawn Plassmeyer, school board president, the districts goal is to eliminate jobs naturally, through retirement or otherwise. One cafeteria worker decided to retire, and the board is waiting to hear back from several others who are considering doing the same. The district saved approximately $40,000 with that one retirement. If several others also decide to take a retirement package, the district will be closed…

On Monday, Mayor Anthony J. Court was honored to present to Evan Westlund of Mt. Vernon Drive, Ellwood City, the 1st 2018 Beautification Award Winner with a Yard Sign and a Gift Certificate at a local restaurant. This is the 2nd time Evan has been nominated and presented with this Award, once in 2013 at a previous address on Wampum Avenue and now at his Mt. Vernon Drive residence. Elaine Hope (Evans) Malovich,91,  passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on June15, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Steve Malovich of Fallston Pennsylvania. Elaine “Red”, was born in Eastvale, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late John and Hazel (Shepperd) Evans. She resided with her daughter in Fombell, Pennsylvania for the past fourteen years. She was a lifetime Beaver County resident, living most of her life in Koppel, where she was homemaker.
