Mike Yuricha, 90, of Ellport passed away at the Haven Convalescent Home in New Castle on Thursday, June 23, 2022. Born in Koppel on November 5, 1931, Mike was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Bon Yuricha.  He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Cesarini.  They were married on July 12, 1952.  Mike was retired from the Ellwood Works of U.S. Steel and was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and SNPJ.  A handyman, Mike enjoyed working on cars or any of his childrens’ projects.  He liked to take care of his yard and his garden…

Lewis Wetzel (Lew) Shirey, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 27th, 2022, in Poland, Ohio. Lew was born in Ellwood City, PA to Harry Sebastian Shirey and Tena Matilda (Tillie) Powell. He met his childhood sweetheart, Margaret (Peggy) Adams, at an eighth-grade skating party. They remained a couple throughout high school and college, married in 1951 and went on to celebrate over 70 years in matrimony. The Wilmington hockey team defeated Burrell 8-1 at Hess Ice Rink on Tuesday extending their team point streak to eight straight game. The Hounds scored the only goal in the first period when Davis Phanco (Wilmington) lit the lamp. The goal was assisted by Andrew Cartwright (Union) and Chance Miller (Wilmington). BREAKING & ENTERING: According to a criminal complaint, on October 13th at approximately 5:33 a.m., Ellwood City police were dispatched to a report of an interior burglary alarm at Fraternal Orders of Eagles on Lawrence Avenue. No forced entray was observed but later that day a member of the club told officers that someone broke into the club the prior night. ASSAULT WITH WEAPON: According to a PA State Police report, Katelyn Weller, 26, and Lindsey Weller, 25, both of Ellwood City have been arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an incident on September 13 at approximately 6:34 p.m. According to the report, PSP New Castle was dispatched to an assault which occurred on West Lawrence Avenue. 25th Annual Ellwood City Easter Egg Hunt Date Announced

Ellwood Area Egg Hunt Committee will be holding its 25th community Easter Egghunt for all area children ages 10 and under. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 4th, starting at 11:00 a.m. in Ewing Park. Every year hundreds of children swarm the park grounds to enjoy a spring day with lots of eggs, candy, and prizes for all participants. Walley Places Third At Powerade Tournament

Ellwood City senior Austin Walley placed third at 195 pounds at the annual Powerade Wrestling Tournament at Canon McMillan High School. Walley used victories in his first three matches to advance to the semifinals on Saturday, only to suffer his only loss early by way of a major decision to Nicholas Feldman of Malvern Prep. Feldmen was later defeated by Luke Stout (Mt. Lebanon) in a 3-2 decision in the 195-pound championship.
