Record 15 Riv-Ell Students Pitch Business Plans

A record 15 high school seniors profiting from a yearlong Riv-Ell Entrepreneurship Program pitched business plans April 25 that impressed Ellwood City area leaders and in pursuit of graduating from Butler County Community College on May 15 with a 16-credit workplace certificate funded by donors. The 11 Lincoln and four Riverside seniors in 2023-2024 represent the largest group to seek the post-secondary credential in a 6-year-old program that combines academic coursework with practical experiences. The Ellwood City boys track and field team placed third in the WPIAL Class 2A team championship at Peters Township Middle School on Tuesday. The Wolverines defeated Hopewell 79-61 to earn the third place finish. “I think many teams underestimated us this year and we proved everyone wrong,” said head coach Nate Brown. “We started with several postponed meets and my belief is the calendar beat us up pretty badly. The Ellwood City Boys’ Track And Field team is heading to the WPIAL 2A Finals next week after a dominating performance in Wednesday afternoon’s qualifying meet at West Mifflin High School. The Wolverines steamrolled its five foes Wednesday beating Riverview 84-66, West Mifflin 86-64, Knock 87.5-62.5 and Waynesburg Central 91-59. In a video made available Wednesday by Manns Woodland Perspective, portions of North Sewickley Township are shown under water as the recent rain event led to high water levels and flooding of the Connoquenessing Creek. The creek reached recorded gage heights as high as 15.23 ft, recorded at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Many state and local roadways were closed and continued to be closed due to the flooding.

The Ellwood City girls basketball team used a decisive third quarter to race away from rival Riverside Monday evening and pick-up a 60-31 RivEll Cup victory that secured a Class 3A playoff berth. Those who drive near the Beaver River Bridge Replacement Project are beginning to notice that construction of the new bridge over the Beaver River is now underway. The contractor is currently constructing new abutment footings and drilled shafts, pier footings and columns.
