PART THREE: Lincoln High School’s Schoolhouse Rock Live! Is A High Energy, Nostalgic Gem

Lincoln High School will present the musical, Schoolhouse Rock Live! starting tonight, April 12, 2024 in the high school auditorium, at 501 Crescent Avenue, Ellwood City (information about the show and how to get tickets can be found at the end of this article). I got a sneak peak at the show, and you don’t want to miss it!

Under the direction of Rick Hudson, this musical is based on the 1970s cartoon. Check out an interview with Director Rick Hudson, here.

Schoolhouse Rock Live! is a high energy, education of sorts that includes music, comedy, and a truly golden cast. It brought me back a little to the high school days of learning civics, math, history, and English but in a fun and nostalgic way.

The plot follows a teacher, Tom, who is nervous for his first day of teaching. When he turns on his TV to watch Schoolhouse Rock!, the characters come alive and assist and encourage him in preparation for his students. The characters actually represent facets of his personality and guide him through his lessons with song and dance. It features popular songs including “I’m Just a Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,” “Do The Circulation,” “Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla,” “Conjunction Junction,” and “The Great American Melting Pot.”

Chase Ramey plays Tom. Crazy enough, Chase kinda looks like a teacher, even at his young age as an eleventh grader. It’s like he was born to play this part. Although he appears very wise, he portrays an innocence that is necessary to empathize with his character. He interacts with the other leads and supporting cast flawlessly and with a pure voice also exudes confidence throughout the growth of his character.

He is supported by Dina, played by Peyton Confer, Dina is a confident young woman, and Peyton hits it out of the park with her attitude, grace, and soulful voice. The girl can sing! Dina is Tom’s mature side. Peyton’s leadership on stage represents this side of Tom very well.

Then there is Dori, Tom’s bubbly side. Played by Lincoln High School’s stage veteran Beth Keener, who has played many lead roles over the years, Dori is a joy to watch. Beth dominates the stage with her strong voice and experience. Audience members won’t soon forget Dori or Beth in her last role on the Lincoln High stage.

Tom also has a sweet side, also known as Shulie. Played by Lynden Beinhauer who completely nails the part. She has such a pure voice with notes that nearly reach the sky and a smile that is undeniable. Lynden has been a staple on the Lincoln High School stage. She has appeared in Godspell and played Phineous Trout in Willy Wonka.

These young women make for a powerhouse trio in numerous numbers of the show blending flawlessly in song.

But I’d be mistaken if I didn’t recognize the male leads in the show … talk about talent.

First there is George, played by Eric Woodend who has a great stage presence and an amazing range. He hits the low notes AND the high notes, in his portrayal of Tom’s romantic side.

And Joe, Tom’s cool side is played by Noah Rhodes. Noah is only a freshman, but he shows such maturity in his role, he blends right in with the upperclassmen. No doubt we will see him in future Lincoln shows.

The leading cast is rounded out strongly with a supporting chorus that shines in their own way. They are high energy and interactive. There’s plenty of talent to be found in the chorus.

Be sure to make it a point to see the show, you won’t be sorry!!
