PHOTOS: Roth Sets Career Scoring Mark, Wolverines Beat Riverside 73-45

Joseph Roth is now the all-time leading scorer in Ellwood City boys basketball history.

The senior knocked down a free throw midway through the second quarter that gave him 1,939 career points, breaking the career scoring record previously held by Dan Aloi.

Roth finished with 18 points in the 73-45 rivalry victory over Riverside Friday night.

The senior night game boasted a platform for the four Ellwood City seniors to shine, and all took advantage with big games for the Wolverines.

Ryan Widmaier scored 17 points (three 3-pointers), Colton Crizer finished with 11 points (three 3-pointers, seven assists), and Nate Williams chipped in with eight points in the victory.

Ellwood City erupted for 26 third quarter points power by three of the team’s seven 3-pointers. Roth collected seven of his points in the pivitol quarter including a coast-to-coast slam dunk.

Adding to his record breaking scoring effort Friday, Roth finished with 22 rebounds and 10 assists to post another triple-double for the Wolverines.  Roth also now holds the single game scoring record for Ellwood City, posting a record high 51-points last month.

Drake Fox scored a team-high 18 points for Riverside in defeat. Will Sullivan and McCartney Plassmeyer each chipped in with nine points for the Panthers.

With his 18 points, Roth officially is booked at 1,948 career points and needs just 52 points to hit 2,000 points. Ellwood City has one regular season game remaining and, with a playoff berth clinched, at least one playoff game ahead for Roth to take aim at the 2,000 point plateau. Roth is average just over 26 points per game on the season.

The Wolverines (14-7 Overall, 9-3 Section 3A-1) take on Shenango on Saturday in non-section action to wrap up its regular season.
