EC Basketball Teams Net Two Christmas Tournament Championships

The Ellwood City boys and girls basketball team each netted a Christmas Tournament championship Thursday evening.

First, the Wolverines boys team easily dismantled Maplewood 62-22 to capture the Mercer Christmas Tournament championship. Nine players, including all five starters, scored in the victory. Colten Crizer scored a game-high 13 points while Ryan Widmaier scored a career-high 12 points off the bench. Joseph Roth stuffed the stat sheet and finished with 12 points (two 3-pointers), 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 7 blocks.

Ellwood City led 20-1 after the first quarter and 33-9 at halftime.  Offensively, the team assisted on 21 of 26 made field goals and defensively collected 23 steals as a team.

The Wolverines (5-5 Overall) return to section play after the new year, hosting three consecutive home games beginning Tuesday, January 2nd versus Mohawk.

In equally impressive fashion, the Ellwood City girls basketball team routed Shenango 67-27 to earn its tournament championship Thursday night in the Shenango Christmas Tournament.

Four Lady Wolverines combined to connect on 10 3-pointers in the victory. Claire Noble scored a game-high 20 points (two 3-pointers) to lead a collection of four starters who scored more than 10 points.

Delaney Sturgeon (15 points, two 3-pointers), Caitlin Kreitzer (13 points, four 3-pointers), and Kayla Jones (11 points, two 3-pointers) joined Noble in double figures.

Ellwood City led 34-16 at halftime and held the tournament-host Wildcats to 11 second half points.

The Lady Wolverines (6-3 Overall) will begin section play Tuesday night against Neshannock before traveling to rival Riverside on Thursday, January 4th.

Drake Fox scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Panthers boys basketball team to a 40-30 victory over Laurel Thursday night.

Fox was one of two Panthers to connect on two 3-pointers in the contest joining McCartney Plassmeyer (nine points) who also knocked home two triples. Darren McDade chipped in with eight points in the victory.

Riverside next hosts Eden Christian Academy Friday evening and then New Brighton on Wednesday, January 3rd.
