Wolverines Basketball Teams Each Collect Tournament Victories

A pair of big men led the offensive charge Wednesday night for the Ellwood City boys basketball team as they picked up a victory over Redbank Valley in the Mercer Christmas Tournament.

Aaron Lake – who finished with a career high 22 points – and Joseph Roth combined to score 53 points in the Wolverines 77-71 victory.

Ellwood City led 37-33 at halftime behind Lake’s 16 first half points. Roth countered with 19 of his game-high 31 points to help the Wolverines secure the victory that sends Ellwood City to the championship game Thursday.

Lake finished with nine rebounds while Roth secured a double-double with 12 rebounds and added seven blocks. Senior Colton Crizer finished with 12 points in the victory.

Ellwood City (4-5 Overall) will next play Maplewood on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. to determine the champion of the Mercer Christmas Tournament.  The Wolverines return to section play after the new year, hosting three consecutive home games beginning January 2nd versus Mohawk.

Lady Wolverines Defeat Beaver 59-44

Ellwood City Girls Basketball Team defeated Beaver 59-44 in its Christmas Tournament opener Wednesday evening.

Three Wolverines provided balanced scoring as Ellwood City led wire to wire in the victory over the Class-4A Bobcats.

Kayla Jones scored a team-high 14 points while seniors Maddy Long (13 points, 1 3-pointer) and Claire Noble (11 points) joined the scoring attack.

Elsie Sturgeon chipped in with nine points.

Ellwood City will next play tournament host Shenango on Wednesday in the championship game of the Shenango Christmas Tournament. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
