PHOTOS: Wolverines Run Past Panthers, Clinch First Playoff Berth Since 2011

Ellwood City used a strong running game powered by Elijah Palmer-McCane to rout Riverside 41-0 Friday Night at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The ‘RivEll Cup’ victory also clinched the Wolverines first playoff berth since 2011. Palmer-McCane scored four first half rushing touchdowns as the visiting Wolverines jumped out to a 35-0 halftime advantage. In the first quarter, Palmer-McCane scored from 1-yard out and later in the quarter from 41-yards out. The Riverside Panthers had a tough match-up on Friday, facing a section-leading Neshannock Lancers team. The visiting Lancers (7-1 Overall) flexed their moxy early, scoring five times in the first quarter and racing out to a 49-6 halftime advantage en route to their comfortable 64-20 section victory over Riverside. History is being made at Ellwood City. In a wild offensive showcase Friday night that featured over 100 combined points and 1,000 combined yards of offense by the Wolverines and Lions, another pair of century marks were reached individually by two Ellwood City juniors who combined to lead the Wolverines to a 62-40 victory on Homecoming night. Running back Elijah Palmer-McCane rushed for 285 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and quarterback Chris Smiley threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns. The Riverside Panthers were defeated Friday night 41-6 by Beaver Falls at Riverside Memorial Stadium. After the team exchanged scores to open the section contest, Beaver Falls (3-3 Overall) scored six straight times including a safety, punt return, and interception return to pull away. Chris Smiley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to a 34-14 victory over Freedom Friday Night at Helling Stadium. The section victory improved the surging Wolverines record to 3-1 on the season – already eclipsing their win total from last year. On Friday, the junior quarterback hooked up with Michael Walters on two touchdown strikes as part of his aerial performance to pace the Ellwood City offense. Ellwood City used a 17-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by running back Elijah Palmer-McCane to break at 12-12 tie and lead the Wolverines to its 25-12 victory over Carlynton Friday night at Helling Stadium. Palmer-McCane rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the evening as the Wolverines collected over 200 yards on the ground rushing as a team. Riverside opened up its regular season Friday night, but the Panthers fell at home to South Side by a score of 35-7. After a 12-yard touchdown run by Brady Newman tied the game in the second quarter, the visiting Beavers scored 28 unanswered points to secure the road victory. Robbie Janis led the Panthers with 96 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Ryan Theadore collected 49 yards passing in defeat. Zach Hare hauled in a team-high four receptions for 34 yards for Riverside. The Panthers (0-1 Overall) next travels to Shenango on Friday for a non-conference tilt.


PHOTOS – Panther Night 2023

Riverside School District held its annual Panther Night Thursday evening at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The program included the introduction of the Panthers fall sports programs and the Riverside marching band. The Panthers football team will have its first home game on Friday, September 1st versus South Side at Riverside Memorial Stadium.  The Panthers also host Ellwood City in the annual Riv-Ell game scheduled for Friday, October 27th.
