PHOTOS: Ellwood City Earns 3rd Place Finish At WPIAL Track & Field Championships

The Ellwood City boys track and field team placed third in the WPIAL Class 2A team championship at Peters Township Middle School on Tuesday.

The Wolverines defeated Hopewell 79-61 to earn the third place finish.

“I think many teams underestimated us this year and we proved everyone wrong,” said head coach Nate Brown. “We started with several postponed meets and my belief is the calendar beat us up pretty badly. That said, I know that I and my coaching staff and very pleased with this finish.”

Quaker Valley won the WPIAL 2A Championship after beating Greensburg Central Catholic 76-65. Ellwood City fell to Quaker Valley 112-38 and 93-57 to Greensburg Central Catholic.

Ellwood City’s 4×800-meter relay team took first place with a time of 8:25.48.

The team isn’t completely done yet as later this week the Wolverines have last chance meets to get final seed times/jumps/throws to qualify for WPIAL individual finals next Wednesday at Slippery Rock University with some individuals jockeying for PIAA Championships in Shippensburg.

The team earned its first-ever playoff win last week knocking off five foes in the WPIAL qualifier.
