Top place finishes by two local athletes spotlighted the individual achievements at the 2024 WPIAL Boys’ & Girls’ Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at the William C. Lennox Track on the campus of Slippery Rock University.
Ellwood City sprinter Nick Franitti took home a 1st place WPIAL Championship in the WPIAL Class 2A Boys 300m Hurdles. Franitti posted a mark of 39.39 to take home gold.
Franitti also posted a personal best in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.85, good for 2nd place.

Riverside’s Reece Sullivan took home 1st place WPIAL Championship in the Class 2A boys Pole Vault with a final mark of 13’0″
The Ellwood City Boys 4×800 Meter relay team finished in 2nd place with a time of 8:01.75, narrowly edged by Quaker Valley. The foursome of Nick Wise, Bradley Custer, Drew Steffler, and Colten Crizer helped shatter their own school record by 12 seconds.
For the Wolverines, Delaney Sturgeon finished 5th in the girls High Jump (5’2″) and Kaden Doccio took home a 6th place finish in the boys 110m Hurdles (15.57).
For the Panthers, Carson Emerick placed 3rd overall in the boys Discus Throw (141’6″) and Owen Glover posted a 4th place finish in the boys Pole Vault (12’6″)
Panther runners Lexi Fluharty earned a 7th place finish in the girls 1600m (5:21.38) and Gavin Lutz also finished 7th overall in the boys 300m Hurdles (41.49)
Each event champions and additional qualified finishers will move onto the PIAA Track & Field Championships, which will be held on May 24-25 at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.
After several stoppages and restarts due to inclement weather delays totaling about four hours, WPIAL chief operating officer Vince Sortino made the call after a reported lightning strike around 9:30 p.m. to suspend the competition until 4 p.m. Thursday with the Class 2A and Class 3A boys 800 races, the 200 finals, the 3,200 run and the 1,600 relay to be contested, along with a couple of field events yet to be completed.
