Ellwood City Defeats Moniteau, Riverside Falls to Shaler

Our two local high school boys basketball teams split their opening games in selective Holiday Tournaments on Thursday. Ellwood City defeated Moniteau in its opening game of a Mercer Tournament while Riverside was knocked off by Shaler Area in its opening game of a Seneca Valley holiday tournament.  Games resume today for each boys basketball team. Cioffi Awarded Commendation For Service To Community

On Monday, former borough manager Joe Cioffi was honored with a plaque as a commendation for his 60 years of service to the community by Mayor Anthony Court. Cioffi, 81, had been serving as a temporary interim manager while the borough looked to find applicants after it was decided by council not to renew the former manager’s, Robert Villella earlier this year. Robert B. Lucarelli, 81

Mr. Robert B. Lucarelli, 81, of Ellwood City passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the Butler Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lucarelli was born on August 14, 1937 in Ellwood City to the late Lorenzo and Rafaelena (Ciramella) Lucarelli. Bob is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1957. Following high school, he served with the U.S. Army for four years during the Korean War. Bob worked at John Manseille (BNZ Materials) in Zelienople for 37 years as a kiln operator. Mrs. Sandra Reisinger, 72, of Ellwood City passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Hospice. Mrs. Reisinger was born on October 22, 1946 in Rimersburgh, Pa to the late Edwin Elder and Velma (Ramsey) McNaughton. She had graduated from the Rimersburgh High School with the class of 1965. She is also a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish and the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers. Mrs. Lois E. Ruby, 86, of Koppel passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at the Heritage Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Ruby was born on June 2, 1932 in New Brighton to the late John and Sarah (Greco) Rowan. For many years Lois worked at Ruby’s Framing in Koppel. North Side Positive Action Program Recognizes Local Heroes

On Monday, children at North Side Elementary school present Ellwood City’s police and fireman as a part of their December Positive Action Program. The idea for this to become a program came from a simple comment made by Dawn Santagata’s granddaughter. “My daughter mentioned to me that my granddaughter had asked her if she should be afraid of the police,” Santagata said.
