Wolverines Can’t Catch Up To Keystone Oaks

Ellwood City fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 7-4 loss to Keystone Oaks in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals Wednesday.

The Wolverines lost despite out-hitting Keystone Oaks 11 to seven.  Keystone Oaks collected four of their hits in a six-run first inning.

In the first inning, Keystone Oaks got their offense started with two walks and two fielding errors by Ellwood City.

The Wolverines got a run back in the first when Maria Ioanilli singled in Ariana Garroway. Ellwood City got another run back in the fifth when Anna Ferrucci singled in Kali Barnett. After closing the lead to three runs the Wolverines stranded two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning.

Angie Nardone took the loss for Wolverines. She lasted seven innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs while striking out three.

Wolverines tallied 11 hits. Anna Ferrucci, Natalia Greco, and Ariana Garroway each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Ferrucci went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Wolverines in hits.

Butler took the win for Keystone Oaks. She went seven innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits and striking out eight. Taylor and S Piatt each had multiple hits for Keystone Oaks.

The softball loss came on the heels of the baseball team also falling to a #3 seeded Keystone Oaks baseball squad in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Monday.  However, the softball team will face South Park in a PIAA play-in game next Tuesday for a spot in the state playoffs.  The game is set for 6:00pm on Tuesday, May 28, at Peters Township.
