74th Anniversary of ‘VJ Day’ Honored

Route 351 Koppel Bridge Long-Term Closure Begins Tuesday in Beaver County

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is announcing the long-term closure of the Koppel Bridge (Route 351) in Koppel Borough and North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, will begin Tuesday, August 13 weather permitting. Beginning at approximately 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, the Koppel Bridge will close to traffic for 72 consecutive days. Crews will conduct roadway approach work for the new construction through October 23. Dark clouds loomed Tuesday evening, but after rain came and passed, the 7th Annual Franklin Township Community Days shined with cheer and excitement. The event, held at the Giant Eagle plaza parking lot, consisted of CPR training, Fire Safety, Local Radio Station, free children’s activities such as a bounce house, slide, petting zoo, balloon twisting, face painting, games and a variety of vendors. The local event is part of America’s National Night Out against crime.  National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors, residents, Township Officials, Police, & Fire Departments while bringing back a true sense of community.


Local Man Charged With Terroristic Threats

On Wednesday, July 31, the Ellwood City Police received a call from a home on Franklin Avenue from a woman who said there was a situation that needed their attention. The woman informed the police that there was a man wearing a black shirt and black shorts walking on Franklin Avenue. She further told police that he had a bag with him and was armed with a knife. According to police reports, the man in question was David Carter of Ellwood City. Carter was armed with a small pocket knife and a small axe. Police placed Carter into custody before…

Jack Ferrante Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament

The Jack Ferrante Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be at Del Mar Golf Course on Sunday, August 11. The tournament is named after Jack Ferrante, who had been the first Groundskeeper/Pro at the Del Mar Golf Course. “He played an important role in the development of the course in the early 1960s,” said event organizer, Joe Cioffi, in a statement. Ellwood City’s very own Diamond Dance Academy was awarded a National Championship title at the 2019 Access Broadway Nationals in New Jersey earlier this month. The dancers left owning the Stage Door Cup, which is presented to America’s Best Debut School. Diamond Dance opened back in 2009 with director Shauna Dorwarth.
