PHOTOS: Wolverines Shutout New Brighton On A Rainy Homecoming Night

The Wolverines forced five turnovers defensively, Elijah-Palmer McCane scored three second half touchdowns, and Dailonn Currie hauled in two touchdown passes Friday night as Ellwood City shutout New Brighton 33-0 on a rainy homecoming night at Helling Stadium.

Holly Palmer was crowned the 2024 Homecoming Queen at halftime.

The in MAC Section game, Ellwood City quarterback Chris Smiley connected with Currie on the first of two touchdown passes, a 21-yard strike midway through the first quarter to put the Wolverines ahead with a 7-0 lead that would last to halftime.

A 40-yard strike from Smiley to Currie put Ellwood City ahead 14-0 early in the third quarter before the ground attack put the game away.

Elijah Palmer-McCane scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns with a little over a minute left in the third when he scampered in from 3-yards to increase Ellwood City’s lead to 21-0. Palmer-McCane scored on runs of 9-yards and 15-yards in the final frame to wrap up his performance.

Palmer-McCane finished with 184 yards rushing on 31 carries in the contest.

Defensively, Ellwood City nose tackle Perry Dubois finished with two tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Gavin Partridge also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass while Tyle Amicone pounced on a fumble recovery for the Wolverines. The team finished with eight tackles for loss as it held the Lions to only 150 yards of net offense and eight first downs in the contest. The Wolverines held New Brighton to 1-of-12 third down conversions.

Ellwood City, unbeaten at 5-0 and ranked #10 in the state in Class 2A, will travel to Western Beaver next Saturday afternoon for a big MAC section contest with the 5-1 Golden Beavers.
