Palmer-McCain Runs Wild, Wolverines Collect Road Victory Over Lions

Elijah Palmer-McCain ran wild Friday night, collecting 231 yards on 32 carries and accounting for all three of offensive touchdowns for Ellwood City as the Wolverines collected their second victory of the season, a 18-13 road triumph over New Brighton.

The sophomore runningback took the Wolverine’s first play from scrimmage 63 yards to the endzone for a touchdown and scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter to give the Ellwood City a 12-0 halftime advantage.

After New Brighton narrowed the margin to 12-6 in the final frame, Palmer-McCain scored on a 20-yard scamper to help put the game away. The running back also caught two passes for 49 yards on the evening.

Ellwood City rushed for nearly 300 yards as a team. The Wolverines double the numbers of first downs (18-6) and almost double the offensive output (403-202) of the host Lions (0-6 overall).

Quarterback Chris Smiley finished with 104 yards (8-20, 1 INT) on the evening, connecting with four different receivers.

Brighton Mariacher led the defensive with 12 total tackles including three tackles for loss and a sack for Ellwood City. Deklan O’Brien grabbed 1.5 sacks and seven tackles.

Ellwood City (2-5 overall) snapped their 27-game section losing streak and will next host (finally!) their first home game of the season Friday versus Beaver Falls. The game will be the first on the Helling Stadium new turf surface and will be the Ellwood City Homecoming game with a queen crowed at halftime.
