EC Boys Tennis Wraps Up Season With Victory; EC Softball Suffers First Defeat

The Ellwood City boys tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a victory Thursday afternoon while the Wolverines softball team suffered its first defeat of its regular season earlier in the week.  Also, the Riverside Panthers baseball team cruised to a 22-0 victory over Summit Academy. SPORTS: Wolverines Baseball Lose On Walk-off; Junior High Softball Cruises

In a thrilling series of events, the Ellwood City Wolverines were finally defeated on a walk-off hit on Wednesday while the Wolverines Junior High Softball team cruised to victory. Wolverines Goes Down On Final Play Against Hopewell After rallying to two runs in the top half of the seventh inning on Wednesday, the Wolverines were felled by a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame and were defeated 4-3 by Hopewell. PHOTOS: Harper Tosses 3-Hitter, Panthers Shutout Wolverines

Panthers starter Ronnie Harper pitched a gem Thursday, twirling five shutout innings as Riverside easily blanked the visiting Wolverines 10-0. Harper allowed just three hits. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk. The Panthers, now 7-1 overall, secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the second inning. Hunter Garvin, Drake Fox, Madden Boehm, and Bo Fornataro, who all drove in runs in the second frame. Boehm slugged a second inning homerun en route to his four-RBI performance. In a collective sweep for Ellwood City teams, three Wolverine teams collected victories on Wednesday. Varsity Softball improved its undefeated record, varsity baseball defeated Freedom Area, and junior high softball got the best of rival Riverside. Ellwood City softball programs are off to great starts this spring, with the varsity squad improving to 4-0 while the junior high team collected a resounding victory to continue its great play. Wolverines Varsity Defeats South Park, Record Now 4-0 Once again, the bats came out hot as the Lady Wolverines beat South Park last night 15-5 at Stiefel Park. In a rather successful sweep on Monday, the Ellwood City baseball team rallied to defeat Freedom 4-3 while across the Connoquenessing River, the hosting Riverside Panthers softball team also defeated the Bulldogs 8-3 on Monday. ECASD Board of Directors Approves Helling Stadium Project

The Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors awarded the Helling Stadium project to Fred L. Burns, Inc., Shippenville, Pa, at an overall cost of $2,562,405. The major portion of that project will be the installation of Astro Turf at a cost of $2,420,000, which includes removal of dirt, addition of drainage, and labor. In addition to the Astro Turf, the track will be resurfaced with a long-lasting synthetic material at a cost of $64,150 and $7,380 for the school colors to be added. Riverside hosted a track meet Tuesday afternoon against Shenango and Ellwood City. The visiting Wildcats collected victories over Riverside (79.5-70.5) and Ellwood City (133-17) while Riverside was able to defeat the Wolverines (124-26). The teams will next look forward to the Beaver County Track Championships scheduled for April 9, 2022.
