Ellwood City Fire Department Gets a Makeover

The Ellwood City Fire Department has gotten a makeover, and the old stucco siding that lined the building of the department has now been replaced by a powder blue siding. The fire department is a combination fire department, which means they have both paid and volunteer firefighters. They are one of 2 in the County that have paid staff. Mr. Ronald D. Lefever, Sr., 74, of Fombell passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Ellwood City Medical Center. Mr. Lefever was born on May 31, 1944 in Pittsburgh to the late Ray and Emma (Tritt) Lefever. ROAR Touch a Truck Event

The Riverside nonprofit organization, ROAR, is hosting a “Touch a Truck” event on July 17 as part of their annual fundraising activities. ROAR is a private, non-profit community initiative, working in cooperation with Riverside Beaver County School District. Riverside Memorial Stadium has no public rest facilities. The athletes, marching band, cheerleaders, students, fans, family members and visiting guests have only a few rented, portable public toilets available. In addition, the athletes do not have a sheltered area to gather before, during or after their games or events. Mrs. Concetta E. “Connie”  Manzo, 94, of Ellwood City, passed away early Friday morning on June 22, 2018 at the Butler Memorial Hospital. Connie was born on March 3, 1924 in Ellwood City to the late Antonio Nocera and Antoinette (DiCerbo) Nocera. She is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1942. Connie married Emmett Manzo on August 22, 1946. She is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish and the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers. Calvin Presbyterian Church Awards Scholarships

Calvin Presbyterian Church recently awarded scholarships to Margaret Behm, Caylin Owens and Alex Vardzel.  Each student was awarded $3,300. Margaret, daughter of Jay and Jennifer Behm, and granddaughter of Judy Brooks, will be studying Early Education with a minor in Special Education.  She received the Dorothy McElroy Scholarship. The date of the next carnival is July 7, 2018 and will be held on the church grounds from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The church hosts this day to provide free fun for the community, to get the community involved with each other, help local businesses and many families within the community. No Proposed Tax Increase for Riverside School District

Total revenue for Riverside School District is proposed to be $24,608,155 with $24,933,735 in expenditures. The district isn’t proposing a tax increase this year. Top expense categories, which reflect 95 percent of the budget, include wages and benefits, debt service, transportation, tuition, supplies and books, utilities, special education services, substitute services, Questeq, equipment and other costs, comes out to $24.9 million, with $271,368 in budgetary reserve. The budgetary reserve includes health insurance, approved private charter and nonpublic school tuitions as well as technical school tuitions. Senate Approves Vogel Bill Promoting Telemedicine in Pennsylvania

The Senate today (June 13) approved legislation introduced by Senator Elder Vogel (R-Beaver) aimed at promoting telemedicine in Pennsylvania as a way to overcome barriers to quality patient care created by distance and reduce the costs of those services. Senate Bill 780 specifically defines telemedicine as “the delivery of health care services provided through telecommunications technology to a patient by a healthcare practitioner who is at a different location.” It also establishes guidelines regarding who can provide telemedicine services, and provides clarity regarding insurance company reimbursement for those services. “Telemedicine can help patients get the care they need. William J. Hufnagel, Jr., 41, of Franklin Twp. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 with his loving wife by his side at the Ellwood City Medical Center. Bill was born on December 29, 1976 in Pittsburgh to William J. and Rose Jones Hufnagel, Sr.. Ellwood City Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser

Ellwood City Volunteer Fire Department is holding a fundraiser for Capt. Frank Condell and family. In March 2018 the ECFD Capt. Frank Condell suffered a significant brain injury. Fire Chief Rick Myers said, “the injury was a natural occurrence and did not occur at the fire station.” According to the department’s statement, Condell was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove a large blood clot. Frank suffered serious bleeding in his brain and the surgery relieved the pressure and stopped the bleeding. Frank has been making steady improvements. Although, Frank is home he…
