Austin Walley Collects First WPIAL Title

Ellwood City senior standout Austin Walley collected his first WPIAL Championship over the weekend at the 2020 WPIAL AA Championship in Canon-McMillan, bringing home the first-ever WPIAL title for Ellwood City wrestling. Walley used three consecutive victories via fall during his 182-pound weight class championship run.  Walley defeated Shane Smith of Fort Cherry, Collin Milko of Carlynton, and Patrick Cutchember of Quaker Valley. Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Wolverines to Riv-Ell Victory

Snowfall and icy cold conditions may have cancelled classes at Riverside and Ellwood City schools on Friday, but a heated rivalry game warmed the gymnasium court at Lincoln High School. Four Wolverine starters reached double figures in scoring to round out a balanced scoring attack that led the visiting Wolverines to its 61-55 victory Friday night at Riverside. Steve Antuono led Ellwood City with 15 points (three 3-pointers) while Nate Coonfare (14 points), Alexander Roth (13 points, three 3-pointers), and Ryan Gibbons (12 points) helped the Wolverines. PHOTOS: Chesko Pours In 25 Points, Lady Panthers Defeat Wolverines

Brielle Chesko drained four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 25 points to lead the visiting Panthers to a 51-31 Section 1-3A victory over rival Ellwood City on Thursday. Marley Wolf added 13 points for Riverside (11-11, 4-10). Chesko easily paced the victors, accounting for nearly half of the team scoring totals. Wolverines Finish 14th In Buckeye Classic Wrestling Tournament; Walley Takes 1st

On Saturday, the Ellwood City Wolverines wrestling team traveled to Rayland, Ohio for a 26-team Buckeye Local Panther Classic Wrestling Tournament. Ellwood City finished 14th as a team with Austin Walley taking 1st place in his weight class.  Rodney Grymes narrowly missed the medal stand, finishing 4th overall in his 220-pound weight class. Walley used two victories each in under ninety seconds to advance early before battling Howard Congdon of West Mifflin Area in a nearly five-minute match. Roundball Roundup: Antuono, Kolesar Erupt In Victories

Steve Antuono erupted for 27 points to help the Ellwood City earn a 58-47 road victory over New Brighton on Tuesday. The Wolverines used a decisive fourth quarter to pull away from the Lions. Ellwood lead by one point and halftime and after the teams exchanged 13-point third quarters, continued to hold a one-point lead until the Wolverines outscored New Brighton 27-17 in the final frame to secure victory. Austin Walley Collects Top Gun Wrestling Tournament Championship

Ellwood City senior wrestler Austin Walley collected a 195-pound championship in the 2020 Top Gun Tournament held at Alliance High School on Saturday. Walley opened up the tournament with consecutive fall victories before stretching his tournament run to the championship match with two decision victories. Walley defeated West Branch junior Kenny Marra in a 13-7 decision to take the 195-pound weight class championship. Ellwood City Lil Angels Announce Softball Sign Ups

The Ellwood City Girls Softball League has announced its 2020 slow pitch softball sign-ups. Riv-Ell Split: RHS Girls, LHS Boys Victorious

In what could amount to a collective draw between rival districts this week, the Riverside girls basketball team collected victory on Monday while the Ellwood City boys team was victorious last night. Both home teams won their host games in the Riv-Ell match-ups. For the girls, Panther Marley Wolf led all scorers with 15 points as the Lady Panthers (7-6 overall) raced out to a comfortable lead early and won 43-21 on Monday. Ellwood City will be pre-selling basketball tickets for the Tuesday, January 14th basketball game against Riverside. Ellwood City High School will presale Student tickets for $2.00. ALL ELLWOOD STUDENTS must have the BLUE ticket or a season pass to sit in the Ellwood City student section.  Ellwood City will also presale Adult tickets for $5.00 and  Riverside has received 150 student tickets for presale. Local Athlete Given Commendation

Ellwood City native and graduate Nicholas “Nick” Ioanilli is in the midst of his senior year at Colgate and has been stirring up the football world since his freshman year. Ioanilli was a three-year letterman and senior captain of the Wolverines Football team during his time here in Ellwood. With those efforts he went ahead was awarded as the Colgate Gordon Watson Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.
