Riverside Boys Relay Team Captures Gold In Day 1 Of WPIAL Championships

The Riverside Panthers boys’ swim relay team took home WPIAL gold on Thursday in Day 1 of the WPIAL swimming championships at Joe C. Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh.

The boys’ relay team placed first in the boys’ AA 200-freestyle. In an exciting finish, the Panthers relay team secured its victory by .01 seconds to claim its championship. Belle Vernon narrowly finished second.

The 1st place WPIAL champion relay team consisted of Josiah Shaffer, Graham Kralic, Sam Kline, and Alex Roth.

Additional results from Day 1 as provided by the Riverside School District athletic department include:

  • Boys 200 medley relay: 3rd place Hayden Panek, Josiah Shaffer, Graham Kralic, Alex Roth
  • Boys 200 freestyle: 12th place Sam Kline, 15th place Hayden Panek
  • Boys 200 individual medley: 2nd place Josiah Shaffer
  • Boys 50 freestyle: 6th place Alex Roth, 9th place Graham Kralic
  • Girls 200 individual medley: 15th Jenna Hayson
  • Girls 200 freestyle relay: 12th Kate Henderson, Leah Frederick, Madeline Dimeo, Jenna Hayson

The Class AA swimming championships continue at 3 p.m. Friday with timed finals in the 100 free, 500 free, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.

Riverside boys team sits in third place after Day 1 (117 points) behind Northgate (133) and Indiana (121).
