Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Wolverines to Riv-Ell Victory

Snowfall and icy cold conditions may have cancelled classes at Riverside and Ellwood City schools on Friday, but a heated rivalry game warmed the gymnasium court at Lincoln High School.

Four Wolverine starters reached double figures in scoring to round out a balanced scoring attack that led the visiting Wolverines to its 61-55 victory Friday night at Riverside.

Steve Antuono led Ellwood City with 15 points (three 3-pointers) while Nate Coonfare (14 points), Alexander Roth (13 points, three 3-pointers), and Ryan Gibbons (12 points) helped the Wolverines.

Ellwood City led by seven at halftime and survived a 23-point third quarter rally by the host Panthers in securing the Riv-Ell victory.  The win capped a two game series sweep for the Wolverines boy basketball team after its January victory at home.

Ben Hughes scored a game-high 19 points in defeat for Riverside.  Nate Scairro (17 points, three 3-pointers) and Kevin Kolesar (15 points) joined Hughes in double figures.

Ellwood City had a decisive advantage from deep, finishing with nine 3-pointers to Riverside’s three in the contest.

Ellwood City finished the season 10-12 overall (5-7 in 3A-1 Section play).

On Thursday, the Lady Panthers defeated Ellwood City to secure its season sweep of the girls Riv-Ell match-up.  All said, the yearly battled concluded in a collective draw helping focus more attention to next year as all four teams seasons have ended with no playoff berths.
