In a tightly contest, third meeting between Riverside and Aliquippa Thursday night, a nearly half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer by Will Gipson found the bottom of the net and bounced the Panthers out of the playoffs by way of a 53-50 defeat. The Riverside Girls Basketball team fell to Seton LaSalle Rebels 50-48 in their first round of the WPIAL Class 3A basketball playoffs Wednesday at North Hills High School. After a Rebel missed free throw with 6 seconds left, the Lady Panthers hurried to get a final shot off that misfired. Lauren Bettencourt sparked Riverside with 17 points in the contest including a 3-pointer with 10.1 seconds left that pulled the Panthers within the two point margin. Three Wolverine Wrestlers Place In WPIAL Championships

Three Ellwood City Wolverine Wrestlers Placed in the WPIAL Championships this weekend.  The Championship finals featured 23 wrestlers currently ranked Top 25 in Pennsylvania. Austin Walley used a decision victory over Austin Mele, Burrell, 4-2, to take 3rd place in the 170-pound consolation match.  Walley had ousted Quaker Valley’s Keegan Forsythe in his opening round match, but fell in a decision to Jaden Detz, of Southmoreland, in the semifinals of the 170-pound division. Riverside Advances, Wolverines Fall in WPIAL Opening Round Action

The 12-seeded Riverside Panthers knocked off Burrell 32-27 Friday Night in Class-3A WPIAL opening round playoff action. Ty Thellman led Riverside with nine points while Donovan Russell led Burrell with 11. WPIAL Basketball Playoff Matchups Announced

The WPIAL released the boys and girls basketball playoff brackets Tuesday night with three local teams making their respective classification playoffs. The Ellwood City and Riverside boys basketball teams both will play Friday night, while the Riverside girls basketball team was seeded with a first round game scheduled for February 21. The Wolverines (5-5 Section 1, 14-8 Overall) will play Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (7-3 Section 2, 11-11 overall) in their first round game Friday night at 6:30pm at Ambridge.  The Section 2 runner-up Trojans, the defending WPIAL Class-3A champion, comes in with a .500 record but owns the classification’s stingiest defense…


Ellwood Bocce Team To Host Season Finale Tuesday

Tuesday afternoon at 2:45, the Lincoln High School Unified Bocce team will host the New Wilmington Greyhounds in their final regular play match of the season. Ellwood City finished their last match of the year last Friday with a 30-24 win against Fort Cherry.  Next Friday, February 16th the Wolverines will be traveling to Canon MacMillan to compete for the section and individual WPIAL Championships. Aided by six match victories, the Ellwood City Wolverines wrestling team defeated New Castle 42-17 Tuesday evening during senior night. The Riverside boys basketball team used a strong first quarter to run away from Mohawk and claim victory in their Section 1-3A finale Tuesday while the Ellwood City Wolverines saw an slim, early lead quickly evaporate in their section finale defeat at the hands of Lincoln Park.
