Tomak, Wilmington Hockey Upset Bishop Canevin In Overtime

An overtime game-winning goal by Ellwood City’s Drake Tomak propelled the Wilmington hockey team to 2-1 upset victory over Bishop Canevin Thursday night. The loss was only Bishop Canevin’s second of the year which were both at the hands of the Greyhounds. The Crusaders got on the scoreboard first with the only goal in the first period, but Wilmington evened the score in the 2nd period on a power play goal by Andrew Cartwright (Union) with assists going to Noah Monstwil (Mohawk) and Davis Phanco (Wilmington). Wolverines Connect On 14 3-Pointers, Cruise To 72-42 Opening Round Victory

Ellwood City came out firing from deep Monday night as they easily ousted visiting Summit Academy 72-42 in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs Monday night. The Wolverines finished with 14 3-pointers in the contest, including five in a 23-point first quarter outburst. Ellwood City led by a dozen after the first quarter and never looked back. Wolverines Open Up Playoffs Against Summit Academy

Ellwood City opens up its WPIAL title defense Monday night against Summit Academy at Lincoln High School at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the 2022 WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs. Gallenz Earns Three Victories, Allen Earns 7th Place In WPIAL Wresting Championships

Ellwood City wrestlers Ben Gallenz and Derek Allen each earned three victories in the WPIAL AA Wrestling Championships over the weekend at Canon-McMillan High School. Allen earned a 7th place finish while Gallenz was defeated in the third consolation round of his weight class. Fellow wrestler, and senior, Donovan Stiffler earned two victories in his weight classes. Gallenz earned an opening round victory over Zander Nuttal (Derry), by fall 4-0 at 2:55 but was defeated in the Championship round of 16 by Davis Stepp (Beth Center) 12-2 at 2:48. Riverside Archery Team Hosting State Qualifying Tournament This Weekend

Riverside Archery’s first at home tournament is this weekend in the high school gym. The state qualifying archery tournament begins Saturday, with eight flights on the hour from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Individual awards for Top 5 girls and Top 5 boys in each division: Middle School and High School. The top two team awards for each division: Middle School and High School. The tournament will have normal flight arrangements with two archers per shooting lane shooting at the same time. Wolverines Earn Top Seed, Playoff Tickets Now On Sale

The “Path To The Pete” starts Monday for the Ellwood City boys basketball team as the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs are set to begin. The Wolverines earned a #1 seed after its 20-2 regular season. The team went undefeated in section play. ECASD Board of Directors Hires Track Coaches

The Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors hired Alan Marsh and Nathan Brown to serve as co-head varsity track coaches during its February 10 meeting. Historically, the track team had one head coach and four assistant coaches. Because of the hiring of co-head coaches, the team will have only three assistants this year, according to ECASD Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley. Wolverine Wrestling Wraps Up Regular Season, Senior Night

The Ellwood City Wrestling team wrapped up its regular season this week with two matches, including their senior night on Wednesday evening. The team was defeated by Sharon 45-30 at home Wednesday and also fell to Slippery Rock 34-30 on the road Thursday. Lady Wolverines Defeat Rival Riverside On Senior Night

Five Ellwood City seniors were recognized prior to Thursday Night’s rivalry game versus Riverside. The Lady Wolverines proceeded to defeat the visiting Panthers 49-18. Three players paced Ellwood City in double figures led by sophomore Claire Noble and her game-high 16 points.  Seniors Kyla Servick (14 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) helped the Wolverines to victory. Senior Gina Flumer chipped in with a fourth quarter layup. Ellwood City remained unbeaten in section play, one night after clinching an outright section championship, with a 65-52 victory over Beaver Falls on Tuesday. Senior Steve Antuono led the charge with a game-high 24 points (10-12 FTs, two 3-pointers, six assists, two steals) while two fellow seniors, Alexander Roth (14 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Peyton O’Brien (13 points, two blocks), joined him in double figures.
