71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic Begins Monday

The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season. Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. PIAA Playoffs: Panthers Fall To Neshannock In Extra Innings

Thursday’s game at against Neshannock was a heartbreaker for the Riverside Panthers, as they lost an early lead, could not capitalize late, and end up on the losing end of the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal contest in extra innings. The game was tied at four with Neshannock batting in the top of the eleventh when Jake Rynd singled on a 2-2 count, scoring the game winning run to advance the Lancers to the PIAA semifinals. Riverside Holds Off Mount Union, Advances In PIAA Playoffs

The Riverside Panthers got out to a five-run lead in the fourth inning and held on for a 5-3 victory over District 6 champion Mount Union on Monday in the opening round of the PIAA Class-2A Playoffs. Riverside got things moving in the first inning, when Bo Fornataro singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. The visiting Panthers struck for two more runs in the third and fourth innings to stretch their lead to 5-0 before Mount Union could respond. Ellwood City Tennis Set To Host A Mini-Clinic

Ellwood City Tennis will be conducting a tennis clinic for any boy or girl interested in learning the basics of tennis. The tennis clinic will be held on June 27th, 28th, and 29th, 2022 at the Ewing Park Courts from 10:00 a.m to 11:15 a.m. Any child ages 5-12 is eligible to sign up and participate. Each participant will receive a t-shirt. The clinic will promote tennis skills from the basic to moderate level. “The participants will learn skills pertaining to tennis. The Riverside Panthers rallied back from a 4-0 deficit Tuesday and collected a 6-4 victory over Burgettstown in the WPIAL Class-3A consolation game at the Ross Memorial Field at the W&J Sports Complex in Washington. Sesti, Roth Each Will Continue Athletics Careers at Collegiate Level

Two Ellwood City student athletes have signed letters of intent this week. Lincoln High School seniors Milo Sesti and Alexander Roth have each signed letters of intent this week to continue their respective athletic careers at the collegiate level. Sesti has signed his athletic letter of intent to continue his golfing career at California State University, according to Curtis Agostinelli, Ellwood City athletic director, while Roth has decided to continue his athletic and academic career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Seven Panthers, Two Wolverines Set To Compete In PIAA Track & Field Championships

Seven Riverside Panthers and two Ellwood City Wolverines will compete in the 2022 PIAA Track & Field Championships scheduled for Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. Alden Wetzel, a WPIAL Champion in the 400m dash (49.94) is among the five Panther boys competing in individual championships. Wetzel joins fellow Panthers Ty Fluharty, Teddy McHale, and Joe Reed. The Riverside Panthers held on Thursday afternoon, escaping late inning jams, to defeat Carmichaels 3-2 and advance to the WPIAL Class-2A semifinals. Alden Wetzel Earns WPIAL Gold, Seven Panthers Qualify For PIAA

Riverside Panther runner Alden Wetzel earned WPIAL gold Wednesday, finishing in 1st place in the 400m dash at the WPIAL Individual Championship meet at Slippery Rock University. The junior finished with a time of 49.94 to earn gold. Wetzel also placed 6th in the high jump with a mark of 5’9″. Wetzel joined six other Panther individuals, and two relay teams, whom qualified for the PIAA State Championships next weekend in Shippensburg.
