SPORTS: Panthers Drop Two To Shenango; Wolverines Defeat Western Beaver; JH Softball Wins

The Panthers boys baseball team met the Shenango Wildcats this week for a crucial home-and-home series to vie for section championship rights. Riverside came up on the short end of both games, falling twice in one-run defeats. On Monday, Riverside battled the Wildcats into an extra-innings affair before a timely squeeze bunt by Wildcats’ Braden Ziegler in the ninth inning scored the game-winning run for the 2-1 a Shenango victory. Reisinger Among 3 Recent NJCAA Division III All-Americans To Be Honored Saturday

Former Lincoln High School standout Breanna Reisinger will be among three athletes honored Saturday at BC3. Reisinger, Morgan Jack, and Aslyn Pry, all first-year student-athletes, have been selected as National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III All-Americans since December and will be recognized Saturday at the BC3 Field House. Reisinger is a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City; Jack, of Knoch High and Pry, of Moniteau. Reisinger led BC3’s volleyball team in 2021 with 205 kills and Jack, with 635 assists. Riverside Track & Field Teams Shine In WPIAL Semifinals

Both Riverside girls and boys track and field teams found great success during the WPIAL Class 2A team playoff semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Riverside High School’s Memorial Field. Each went unbeaten with their team performances. The Panthers boys defeated North Catholic 87-63, Carlynton 120-26, Deer Lakes 115-34, and New Brighton 108-41. Amber McQuistion mowed down the Mohawk Warriors to the tune of a five inning no-hit performance on Wednesday. As a result, the Ellwood City junior high softball team easily defeated the visiting Warriors 10-0. McQuistion struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk in her steller all around performance. She also finished 2-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI on the afternoon. The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation (ECABF), one of western Pennsylvania’s oldest amateur baseball programs, held their 73rd Annual Opening Day on Saturday at the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. Players from the Little League, Minor League, Farm League and Tee-Ball League participated in a parade to Freidhoff Field-the home of the first Little League program, in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer counties. Seventeen teams, led by Mayor Anthony Court, were greeted by the Ellwood City Wolverines’ Head Coach Chris Weisz, his staff and varsity players.
