Stiefel Park Summer Hockey League Cancelled

Due to the new guidelines of mask requirements, the Stiefel Park Hockey summer session has been cancelled. Originally, the decision had been made for the summer league to start after the 4th of July weekend, due to restrictions in Pennsylvania and many players traveling the country for vacations. They had to postpone the season originally due to the rink being located in Beaver County and weren’t even able to begin a season until the county entered the Green Phase. PLAY BALL! Local Youth Summer Seasons Beginning

Typically, a summer season for baseball and softball would be filled with play-off games and tournaments, but since the pandemic, local youth baseball and softball organizations have decided to use whatever they can of the summer to give the local youth a chance to play this year. Local leagues like the Ellwood City Girls Softball League, will only have 5 teams for their 13-18 age group and 3 teams for their 9-12 age group. Ellwood City Little League Season Begins

The Ellwood City Little League, one of Pennsylavania’s oldest Little League programs, begins its’ season on Tuesday night. The league, which was of one of just over 300 leagues in North America in 1950, begins its’ 71st season with four teams-The Moose, Lions, Wolves and WesBanco. The Moose Club and Lions Club have been team sponsors since the leagues inception. The league managers are Tim Kennedy for the Lions, Keith Keller for the Moose, Jim Bleakney for WesBanco and Doug Hogue for the Wolves. WesBanco will meet the Moose at 6:00 on Tuesday night. Gov. Wolf Provides Guidance to Resume High School and Other Summer Sports

The Wolf Administration today issued preliminary guidance for high school and recreational sports teams to resume voluntary workouts and other in-person activities in the state’s yellow and green phases. The guidance includes college and professional sports. “Pennsylvania has some of the best athletes and teams in the country and they can now begin to safely return to organized sports,” said Gov. Walley Presented With Plaque

Wrestling standout Austin Walley was presented a plaque during the June 3rd Wolves Club meeting. This plaque is a commemoration towards the seniors accomplishment of becoming Lincoln High School’s first ever champion in the PIAA Class 2A State Wrestling Championship. Walley closed out his senior year with a 45-1 record and a career mark  of 139-25.  The 182-pound Ellwood City senior earned the PIAA Wrestling Championship for with a victory over Dylan Bennett of Montoursville Area HS in March after collecting WPIAL gold in February. WPIAL Reveals New Basketball Sections for ’20-’21 Season

The WPIAL revealed updated boys and girls basketball section alignments Tuesday and Ellwood City and Riverside basketball teams each saw a slight turnover in their section opponents. For the boys, Ellwood City and Riverside both will continue to reside in Class 3A Section 1 with the likes of Beaver Falls, Laurel, Lincoln Park, Mohawk, and Neshannock. Governor Wolf Announces May 1 Reopening of Limited Outdoor Rec, Including Golf

To ensure that Pennsylvanians have opportunities to safely enjoy outdoor recreation as a way to maintain positive physical and mental health, and in keeping with the commonwealth’s stay-at-home orders to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Governor Tom Wolf today announced that the Wolf Administration is lifting some restrictions on businesses related to certain outdoor activities. PIAA: Spring Sports Postponed Another Two Weeks

On Monday, Governor Wolf issued a “stay at home” directive to citizens in seven counties for the next two weeks. This directive also closes all commonwealth schools and all non-essential businesses for another two weeks. The Governor is taking a measured approach in mitigation to assist in combating the coronavirus. Walley Wins PIAA State Championship, First For LHS

Austin Walley is a state champion. The Ellwood City senior became the first to bring home a PIAA Wrestling Championship for Lincoln High School as he a victory over Dylan Bennett of Montoursville Area HS to claim gold on Saturday. Walley entered the 182-pound Class-AA championship match with only one loss on the season and squared off against an undefeated Bennett (39-0). Walley used a 6-5 decision to knock off Bennett. Riverside Boy’s Swimming Team Off To PIAA State Championships

After earning WPIAL gold on Day One of the WPIAL Swimming Championships on Thursday, the Riverside boys’ swimming again placed well on Day Two of the Class-AA WPIAL championship meet. Senior Josiah Shaffer posted a 2.17 second time drop in the 100 breast, securing a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:01:64. Sophomore Alexander Roth, juniors Graham Kralic and Hayden Panek, and freshman Sam Kline also secured a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard free relay after posting a notable 6.18-second drop for a 3:20:57 finish.
