Gibbons, Wolverines Advance In WPIAL Playoffs With 2-1 Extra Inning Victory

Ryan Gibbons spent his time on the mound avoiding bats with an outstanding pitching effort and knocked in the game’s winning run at the plate, putting the bat on the ball and putting the Wolverines in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

Gibbons, who struck out 14 in eight innings of one-hit ball, put down a squeeze bunt to score the winning run from third base to propel the Wolverines to an opening round 2-1 victory over Keystone Oaks Thursday afternoon.

Gibbons, who went the distance, allowed only one hit, one walk, and no earned runs in the extra innings affair.

Ellwood City got on the board first, and early, with a first inning run by way of an RBI single by catcher James Meehan. The lead held until Keystone Oaks earned its only hit on the afternoon, a run scoring double by shortstop Nate Brestensky, that tied the game at one.

The game remained tied until Gibbons’ bunt scored Ashton Wilson in the eight inning.

Wilson collected two hits of the Wolverines six hits in the contest and scored two runs to lead the offense. Meehan added two walks, reaching base three times for Ellwood City.

The Wolverines boys baseball team will next play South Park in the Class-3A quarterfinals on Saturday, May 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Burkett Field on Moon Run Road in McKees Rocks.
