PHOTOS: Wolverines Race Past Rival Riverside, 60-45

Ellwood City used a decisive first quarter to race out to an early lead in its eventual 60-45 victory over rival Riverside Friday evening at Riverside High School. The Wolverines used 10 first quarter points by sophomore Joseph Roth to race out to a 19-4 advantage.  The 15 point cushion held through halftime as the teams played even through halftime with Ellwood City ahead 31-16 at the break. Ellwood City Wrestling Takes 3rd Place In Section Duals

The Ellwood City Wrestling team posted a 3rd place finish at the WPIAL AA Section 2-A Duals qualifying tournament at Laurel High School Tuesday evening. The team defeated Ambridge and Central Valley but were defeated by Freedom Area and the host Laurel Spartans. The top two teams qualify out of the section for playoffs. Ellwood City wrestlers finished as follows: Derek Allen (106 lbs) 4-0 on the night with a pin over Reid Ketzel from Laurel. Wilmington Hockey Extends Point Streak, Routs Burrell 8-1

The Wilmington hockey team defeated Burrell 8-1 at Hess Ice Rink on Tuesday extending their team point streak to eight straight game. The Hounds scored the only goal in the first period when Davis Phanco (Wilmington) lit the lamp. The goal was assisted by Andrew Cartwright (Union) and Chance Miller (Wilmington). Wilmington had a 3-1 advantage after two periods with two scores from Drake Tomak (Ellwood City). Jumpin’ Joe! – Roth Scores 35 Points, Wolverines Improve To 12-2

Ellwood City big man Joseph Roth showed his prowess on both ends of the court Tuesday night, collecting 35 points and hauling in 20 rebounds to lead the Wolverines to a 49-35 victory over section foe Laurel. After an uneventful first quarter, Roth heated up and scored 11 points in the second quarter that saw the host Wolverines pull away for a 19-9 halftime advantage. Ellwood City Wrestling MAC Tournament Results

The Ed Driscoll MAC Wrestling Tournament is one of the biggest wrestling tournaments that features some of the best talent from all around the country. The 24 team tournament saw Quaker Valley crowned as top overall team win with 223 points, beating out other powerhouse teams such as West Allegheny, Laurel, Montour, and Central Valley.  Ellwood City finished 11th overall with 39.0 points. ECASD Hires Head Football Coach; Approves COVID Health and Safety Plan

The Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors hired Daniel Bradley to serve as head coach of varsity football. Bradley received unanimous support from the board. He will be paid $7,000. “The students are elated,” said Brian Partridge, football boosters president, who was in attendance at the meeting. Bradley has a decade of experience serving as head coach. During that time, he has a 80-33 record. He has appeared in four WPIAL title games, with a winning title in 2018. Wilmington Greyhounds Defeat Trinity On Senior Night

The Wilmington hockey team defeated Trinity at Hess Ice Rink on Senior Night by a score of 7-6. The seniors class honored prior to the game were Ayden Leslie (Mohawk), Bo Leslie (Mohawk), Cody Williams (Ellwood), Dom Serafino (Wilmington), Drake Tomak (Ellwood), Josh Work (New Castle), Logan Popovich (Wilmington), and Tyler Girman (New Castle). “Splash Brothers” Alexander and Joseph Roth combined to score 43 points Friday night to power the visiting Wolverines to a 56-34 victory over Neshannock. In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class-3A playoff semifinal, Ellwood City led the wire to wire for the impressive road victory in the match-up of two loss section foes.  The Wolverines had previously upset the 2-seeded Lancers in last year’s WPIAL Championship run. Holy Redeemer’s Cash & Golf Bash Less Than Two Weeks Away

Less than two weeks are left until Holy Redeemer’s Golf Bash takes place on Sunday, January 16th. Roth, Wolverines Knock Off Rival Riverside

Senior Alexander Roth connected on six 3-pointers en route to his game high 26 points to lead Ellwood City to at 63-40 victory Tuesday Night over rival Riverside. Roth scored 16 points in a first half that saw the Wolverines race out to a 39-24 halftime lead. In a well rounded effort, Roth added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
