Braiden McClure Earns Runner-Up Mark In District AA Sectionals

Sophomore Braiden McClure finished runner-up in the 107-pound weight division at the District 7 AA Sectionals last weekend at Keystone Oaks High School. McClure opened up with a major decision victory before bowing out the in the finals to Angelo Boni of Central Valley. McClure now holds an individual match record of 22-7 this season. Gavin McClure pinned Jonah Hostutler of Keystone Oaks to earn a 3rd place finish in the 127-pound class. The Riverside Coed Swimming & Diving team hosted Central Valley on Wednesday Night as part of its senior night. The team will next turn its attention to the MAC Swimming Championships this weekend and the WPIAL Class AA Swimming Championships on February 26, 2026 at the University of Pittsburgh. The 2026 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ & Girls’ Swimming & Diving Championships begin with the diving championships on February 20-21 before concluding with the swimming championships on February 26-27.

ECASD Board of Directors Table Hiring of Head Football Coach for Special Meeting

Although the Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors, according to the agenda posted on the district’s website, was set to vote to hire a new head football coach during Monday’s meeting, a coach was ultimately not hired. The 7 p.m. public meeting was delayed 50 minutes as the board held an executive session for interviews. The Ellwood City boys basketball team returns to the WPIAL Playoffs as a 9-seed while the Riverside Panthers boys basketball team earned a 14-seed in the 2026 WPIAL Class 3A Championships. The Ellwood City boys basketball team was defeated 67-52 by Aliquippa at home Friday evening as part of its senior night. Kaleb Servick scored a game-high 19 points while Aaron Lake delivered a double-double (10 points, 15 reboounds) in defeat. Aliquippa (13-5 Overall, 9-2 Class 3A-1) raced out to an early 19-9 lead and 34-21 lead at halftime. Javarri Carter finished with a team-high 17 points for the Quips. The Lady Wolverines fell 58-25 to Quaker Valley on Thursday night at Lincoln High School on its senior night. Sophomore Jadyn Allwine led all Ellwood City scorers with seven points. Teegan Patterson and senior Ava Lucarelli each scored six points in defeat. Mimi Thiero poured in a game-high 20 points for Quaker Valley (15-6 Overall, 12-2 Class 3A-1) who led 30-14 at halftime. The Riverside girls basketball team has clinched a playoff berth and wrapped up its regular season Thursday with a 52-13 victory over New Brighton. The Ellwood City Girls Softball League will be hosting sign ups on Saturday, January 31st and Saturday, February 7th from 10:00 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, February 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The location of the sign-ups will be the Ellwood City McDonald’s. Ellwood Area Family Center Hosting Youth Baseball Clinic in February

The Ellwood Area Family Center will be hosting a youth baseball clinic in February. The goal is to enhance youth baseball in the community and will be open to players ages 10-12. The clinic will be run by Coach Jeff Fotia, former Ellwood City high school baseball coach who won multiple section titles and a PIAA state championship in 2003 and former players from the state championship team. Kaleb Servick and Aaron Lake combined for 46 points as Ellwood City easily dismissed New Brighton 81-50 on Friday night to clinch a WPIAL Class 3A playoff berth Servick poured in 18 first half points as the Wolverines held a 44-20 advantage at halftime.
