With a thrilling 1-0 victory Thursday over South Side the Ellwood City Wolverines soccer team snapped a 113-match winless streak that dated back over 15 years.
A penalty shot goal by F / M senior Anthony Popovich at the 22:43 mark of the first half was the lone goal in the contest.
Ellwood City improves to 1-3-1 on the season and next will travel to Ambridge on September 22nd.
Oddly enough, prior to Thursday the last victory by the soccer team earned was also over South Side in September 2010.

EC BOYS GOLF 192 LAUREL 213
The Ellwood City boys golf team defeated Laurel 192-213 Thursday afternoon at Sylvan Heights GC.
With the victory, the team clinched at least a share of the section title with an 11-1 mark in Section 5-2A. Ellwood City finishes tied with Neshannock for the section crown.
Cameron Keller shot a team-best round of 36 on Thursday while Luca Carsele (37) and Adam Jeffcoat (38) finished with sub-40 rounds for the Wolverines.
Gino Biondi (40) and Anderson Weisz (41) rounded out the scoring for Ellwood City who improved to 14-1 overall on the regular season.
The team will next focus on the Section Individual Qualifiers that take place on September 22nd before wrapping up its regular season at Wilmington on September 23rd.
EC GIRLS GOLF DEFEATS BEAVER, CENTRAL VALLEY IN TRI-MEET
The Ellwood City girls golf team defeated Beaver and Central Valley Thursday afternoon at Seven Oaks CC in a tri-meet.
Rylee Prestopine finished with a team-low round of 49 with Ava Trputec not far behind with a round of 51 for the Lady Wolverines.
The girls will next focus on the Section Individual Qualifiers that take place on September 21st before wrapping up its regular season with a home contest against Sewickley Academy on September 22nd at 2:30 p.m.
Match against Sewickley Academy has playoff implications for EC. If EC defeats SA, they will also qualify for possible Team playoffs.
