For the first time in 25 years, both the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for their respective WPIAL Playoffs in the same season. The Ellwood City boys (15-7 Overall, 9-3 Section 3A-1), winners of five consecutive games and 10 of their last 11 games, earned a 9-seed in the WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs and will face Washington on Monday, February 19th. Joseph Roth is now the all-time leading scorer in Ellwood City boys basketball history. The senior knocked down a free throw midway through the second quarter that gave him 1,939 career points, breaking the career scoring record previously held by Dan Aloi. Riverside Bocce Team Qualifies For Playoffs

The Riverside Unified Bocce Team has qualified for the North Division Playoffs. The team finished 3-1 on the regular season and will travel to Ellwood City on Tuesday, February 20 at 3:30PM for a playoff match-up against Beaver Falls. New Advocacy Group Formed to Preserve Ewing Park, Oppose Planned Softball Field

A new advocacy group has been formed to preserve Ewing Park. The Citizens for Ewing Park Preservation (CEPP) group was announced during Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors Committee Meeting Monday evening. Chairperson for the group, Karen Mancini, is a resident of Beatty Street, which faces the old Ewing Park School property where the district has proposed and plans to construct a girls softball field. The playoff-bound Lady Wolverines knocked off Beaver Falls 46-40 Monday evening during its senior night game. Ellwood City pulled away in the second half after trailing at halftime. Kayla Jones scored a team-high 15 points, including 9-16 free throws. The junior connected on 7-10 free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Wolverines secure the crucial section victory. Ellwood City Family Center Offering Six-Week Indoor Soccer Session

Wolverines Wrestling Finishes 11th Overall At Buckeye Panther Classic

The Ellwood City wrestling team placed 11th overall recently at the Buckeye Local Panther Classic. The team was among 22 teams participating in the tournament at Buckeye Local High School in Ohio on Saturday, January 27th. Gavin McClure and Gabe Lilly each advanced to the championship finals in their respective weight classes to pace the Wolverines team efforts. Senior Joseph Roth poured in a career-high 51 points Friday Night but Ellwood City lost in a 82-77 shootout to the section-leading Mohawk Warriors.
