Deer Lakes Downs Wolverines In WPIAL Opening Round

The Ellwood City Boys Basketball was downed by the Deer Lakes Lancers 76-57 Monday evening in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs. Five-peat! Riverside Boys Swimming Collects Another Section Championship, Next Up WPIAL Championships

Small, mighty, and ready to explode off the blocks! The Riverside Boys Swimming Team has collected their fifth consecutive section championship and will next turn its focus to the WPIAL Swimming Championships scheduled for March 2-3 at the Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Ellwood City Boys Basketball team’s opening round playoff game will be on Monday, February 20th at Deer Lake High School at 7:00 p.m. The Wolverines (15-7 Overall) drew a 12-seed as the fourth team from Section 1 Class 3A and will face a 5-seed Deer Lakes team (13-8 Overall, 10-2 Section 3) that tied for its section crown with Shady Side Academy. Ellwood City avenged a January loss to rival Riverside Friday night, collecting a 56-41 victory and clinching a playoff berth. This time they had the services of junior big man Joseph Roth, but it was another Wolverine starter that propelled the visiting Wolverines to victory Will Nardone entered Friday’s contest averaging under five points per contest, but the sophomore erupted for 21 points including more made 3-pointers (five) than his season average in points. The Ellwood City girls basketball team fell 56-26 Thursday night to the section leading Laurel Spartans as part of their Senior night festivities. Liz Mihalko, Brooke Roth, and Aliya Garroway were the three Ellwood City girls basketball seniors recognized in advance of the game. Claire Noble led the Wolverines on the court Thursday with a team-high 11 points while seniors Roth (6 points) and Mihalko (2 points) each collected points in their final home game. Ellwood City and Riverside will have a playoff berth on the line Friday when the two teams square off in their Riv-Ell rematch. This after Ellwood City used a 35-point scoring outburst by junior Joseph Roth to hold on and defeat Beaver Falls 57-51 Tuesday night at Lincoln High School. Lady Wolverines Complete Sweep Of Rival Panthers

Sophomore Caitlin Kreitzer scored a career high 18 points to lead the Lady Wolverines to a 52-33 road victory over Riverside on Monday evening. The victory capped a season sweep in the Riv-Ell series as Ellwood City earned a home victory earlier in January. On Monday, Kreitzer, who connected on two 3-pointers, was among three Wolverines in double figures. Interested in trying Soccer? The Ellwood City Soccer Boosters are hosting a FREE clinic for Ellwood City and Shenango students (including Cyber, Charter and Lincoln Park) currently in 8th-11th grade on Sunday, February 26, 2023. The clinic will be held at the Lincoln High School big gymnasium and will be led by BC United coaches and staff.  It is open to both male and female student athletes. EC Wrestling Team Finishes 12th Place, Shriver Takes 2nd In Mercer VFW Tournament

Sophomore Logan Shriver placed 2nd overall in his 107-pound weight class at the Mercer VFW Wrestling Tournament last week to help boost the Wolverines wrestling team to its 12th place overall finish. Shriver, a second year wrestler, secured a place in the championship match after he earned a 5-1 decision victory over Lexi Doerflinger (Slippery Rock) in the semifinals. Also earning a spot on a podium was sophomore Derek Allen, whom finished 3rd overall in the 114-pound weight class. Allen finished 3-1 in the tournament. Del-Mar Golf Club Named Among Golfers’ Choice Top 25 Most Improved Courses

In a recent NBC GolfPass article, Del-Mar Golf Club was among 25 courses that earned national recognition as golf courses making a comeback. “It is a tremendous honor to have the NBC Golfpass community recognize the efforts we have made,” says Samuel Barry, Del-Mar Golf Course President. “Continually earning higher ratings, by our costumers, is validation that Delmar is moving in the right direction.” According to the GolfPass.com article, the 25 courses earned higher ratings in 2022 than they did in 2021.
