Ellwood City Athletic Director Proposes Reforms for Equipment Purchasing and Field Upgrades

At Monday’s agenda setting meeting, Athletic Director Darin Morella presented several major ideas to the Ellwood City Area School Board. Foremost, Morella, who was appointed AD this past summer, wished to reorganize the method with which the athletic department purchases equipment in order to cut down on wasted equipment, save money and have equipment arrive in a more timely fashion. His proposal is in cooperation with Richard Zarone, the district’s business manager. As it is currently done, all sports order their equipment at the same time, around May. Ellwood City Girls Basketball on Three Game Roll

After a rough early season, the Ellwood City girls basketball has bounced back into swing. The Lady Wolverines won three games in a row and are now 3-4 in their class AAA conference. Following a 56-44 victory against Hopewell on Jan. 4, the girls defeated Lincoln Park 38-19 on Thursday, Jan. 7. Allie McKelvey and Karrington Ketterer paced the Wolverines with 10 points each and Cortni Prine had seven. Ellwood Wrestlers Win Gold and Silver at MAC Championships

Ellwood City’s Tyler Alberts won his weight bracket in the MAC championships held on Saturday, Jan. 9. Alberts went 6-0 to claim the top spot in the 126 weight bracket. Tyler Baird also earned a medal as runner-up in the 113 category. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood Overcomes 10 Point Deficit For Win Against Beaver

The Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the Beaver Bobcats 61-58 in Tuesday’s home conference game. For most of the game, it didn’t seem Ellwood City would pull through. The Wolverines were left behind as the Bobcasts outscored them 29-19 in the first half. The teams scored an even 16-16 in the third quarter, so Beaver merely had to maintain its lead for the duration of the game. The Ellwood City Wrestling team took second place at the Southside Duals tournament on Saturday, Jan. 2. Ellwood went 3-2, defeating Ambridge, Highlands and Independence. The Lady Wolverines and Lady Panthers clashed at Lincoln High School in a non-conference rivalry game on Tuesday for the LGKG Holiday Classic. Riverside won 53-42. The two teams had started their seasons in a similar manner at the Ellwood City Tip-Off Tournament. As before, Riverside emerged victorious, although the rematch proved to be a closer competition. Basketball Week Summary: Riverside and Ellwood City Teams All Suffer Conference Losses

The Riverside Lady Panthers experienced their first lost 51-39 to hosting Neshannock in a conference game yesterday on Monday. Riverside started out in the lead, ending the first half 21-12. However, the third quarter was far from their finest moment as the Lady Panthers only saw two points to the Lady Lancers’ 14. A 25-16 final quarter saw Riverside go home defeated for the first time.
