Mittler’s Walkoff Picture Perfect Ending In Wolverines’s Victory Over Avonworth

A walk-off single propelled Wolverines to a decisive, dramatic victory over Avonworth, 20-19 on Friday afternoon. Wolverines trailed 19-18 in the bottom of the seventh inning after rallying from a double digit deficit when Reagan Mittler singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.

There was plenty of action on the basepaths as Wolverines collected 13 hits and Avonworth had 11 in a wild game that featured four combined home runs, 24 walks by both teams, and ten combined errors in the contest.

Avonworth got things moving in the first inning, when Sarah Helffrich doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring the game’s opening run.  Avonworth scored six more runs in the fourth inning led by an offensive onslaught by Stanley, Maya Berg, Z Pery, Dominique Raught, and Natalie Marshall, who all drove in runs.  Avonworth stretched their lead to double digits by the fifth inning and threatened to invoke the mercy rule before the Ellwood City offense erupted.

Wolverines put up ten runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The rally was led by singles by Natalia Greco and Maria Ioanilli, a walk by Ioanilli, a sacrifice fly by Maura Agostinelli, a home run by Mittler, an error on a ball put in play by Ariana Garroway, and a double by Anna Ferrucci.

Madi Krugh got the start for Wolverines. She lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and 19 runs while striking out one.

Maya Kozup led things off on the hill for Avonworth. She went four and two-thirds innings, allowing 13 runs on ten hits and striking out six. Helffrich threw two innings out of the bullpen.

Wolverines hit two home runs on the day. Mittler went deep in the fifth inning. Ioanilli had a long ball in the second inning. Avonworth socked two home runs on the day. Raught went yard in the second inning. L Tedesco had a homer in the third inning.

Zoe Kalantzis, Ioanilli, Ferrucci, and Mittler all managed multiple hits for Wolverines. Ferrucci, Ioanilli, and Kalantzis each collected three hits to lead Wolverines.  Mittler knocked in five runs to lead the Wolverines.
