The Ellwood City girls basketball team raced out to an early advantage Thursday night en route to its 54-31 Riv-Ell victory over the visiting Riverside Panthers. The Wolverines used a 20 point first quarter to jump out to an early advantage they never relinquished on their home court. Kayla Jones scored a game-high 19 points for the Wolverines (5-4 overall) while Aliya Garroway (11 points) and Claire Noble (10 points) joined Jones in double figures.  Ellwood City held a 30-18 halftime advantage and 38-21 lead after three quarters. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

THEFT OF SERVICES: On December 29, 2022 at approximately 12:06 p.m., PA State Police investigated a reported theft of services at Harmony Hardscape & Landscape, located on Route 422, Slippery Rock Township. The victim related that on September 12, 2022, a check, which had been supplied by their customer, in the amount of $3,865.78 had been denied by Wesbanco as having insufficient funds. The victim related that a single payment was made on 11/11/22, but that the victim has been unsuccessful in establishing contact with the customer since the date. An investigation is ongoing. Wolverines Knock Off Undefeated Warriors 71-67

The Ellwood City Wolverines boys basketball team went on the road Tuesday night and knocked off an undefeated Mohawk team in a battle of Class 3A Section 1 titans. Both teams entered the evening with nine wins, but Ellwood City used a fourth quarter rally, outscoring Mohawk 25-15, to find its way to its 10th victory of the season. Wolverine standout Joseph Roth scored 18 of his game-high 38 points in the final frame to help Ellwood City erase a six point deficit entering the 4th quarter. Learn about our natural world and support conservation in Beaver County. Beaver County Conservation District is hosting a training course for PA Master Naturalist volunteers at our office this spring. This course has limited space and registration is required. Final deadline is February 1, 2023 to register. The course will take place on Wednesdays from April 12 to June 28, 2023. HARRASSMENT: On December 16th at approximately 8:00 p.m., PA State Police received reports of an altercation that took place at a residence on Orchard Avenue, Ellwood City Borough between a 46-year-old Ellwood City man and a 15-year-old male victim. Upon police arrival it was determined that a physical altercation took place, and both parties requested not to prosecute. Wolverine wrestler Ben Gallenz made it to the Championship Quarterfinals during day one matches Southmoreland Holiday Classic to help earn Ellwood City its 28th place finish in the two day wrestling tournament. The 139-pound Gallenz pinned Carl Raitano (Plum) at 1:57 in his opening round match-up and advanced to later earn a 9-1 decision victory over Keegan Young (Greensburg Salem) in Round 2 before falling in the Championship Quarterfinals.
