PHOTOS: McElwain Motors Hosts Toys For Tots Drop Off

McElwain Motors hosted a Toys For Tots drop off at its dealership this holiday season. The Lawrence County Toys for Tots Foundation picked up the donated toys at the dealership on Tuesday.  The dealership was able to fill three Chevy Silverados with toys and also filled a sligh with toys. The dealership would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s toy drive. Ames Department Stores, Inc. Announces A Return In Spring 2023

Saddle up for a trip down memory lane. Ames Department Stores has announced on its website that its stores are returning in spring 2023. The chain of discount stores was first founded by three Connecticut brothers, Milton, Irving and Herbert Gilman, in 1958 and grew to the four largest discount retailer in the 1990s. The franchise had a storefront in the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. At its peak, Ames operated 700 stores in 20 states. VIDEO: “The Pale Blue Eye” Trailer, Filmed In Lawrence County

Netflix has released the trailer for “The Pale Blue Eye,” a Christian Bale movie with scenes filmed in several Lawrence County and nearby locations. The storyline centers on a veteran detective investigating murders, assisted by a detail-oriented young cadet who later becomes legendary horror author, Edgar Allan Poe. Production moved around Western Pennsylvania during filming and includes Lawrence County’s McConnells Mill State Park and Westminster College. Late last year, the film’s production team transformed the Westminster quadrangle into a set depicting the West Point military academy in 1830. Bruce Allen Ives, 64, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2022. He was born September 1, 1958, in Ellwood City, PA to Robert T. Ives and Ruth B. (Minkel) Ives. Bruce graduated from Valparaiso High School, Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in Fine Arts. Bruce’s professional career was largely spent working for nonprofit organizations in Chicago. Bruce was a lover and supporter of the arts. Hack Wilson Historical Marker Among 36 New State Historical Markers Approved

A Hack Wilson Historical Marker is among the subjects of 36 new Pennsylvania Historical Markers approved by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC). The PA state marker is to be placed on State Route 65, Woodside Avenue, by Lincoln High School baseball fields. The Ellwood City Area Historical Society was instrumental in promoting Hack Wilson’s accomplishments. Lewis Robert “Hack” Wilson (1900–1948), was born in Ellwood City and was one of baseball’s greatest power hitters in the 1920s and 1930s. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

THEFT ALL OTHER: On December 5th, at approximately 11:51 a.m., PA State Police responded to a reported theft of a real estate sign. This occured near the intersection of 16th Street and W. Lawrence Ave., Wayne Township. This theft occurred approximately between 10/31 and 11/14 according to the report. The real estate sign is an Advantage Homes Real Estate sign that is predominately blue in color with white lettering. The sign is valued at $350.00. The investigation is ongoing. Ellwood City Winter Sports Tickets To Be Sold Online

Ellwood City Area School District will be slowly making the change to digital ticketing for all sports. The first round of ticketing for the Ellwood City Wolverines to be sold on-line will be for the 2022-23 Winter Sport Season. Tickets will be sold on-line at www.gofan.co or the Go Fan app. There will be no tickets sold at the school at this time. There will be a limited amount of Adult tickets, $5.00, and Adult season passes, $20.00, available to be purchased at the gate for each home game this season.
