Ellwood City Junior High Cheerleaders Painting Paw Prints

The Ellwood City Junior High Cheerleaders are painting paw prints across Lawrence Ave. today as well as making their way all over Ellwood City as a fundraiser for the cheer-leading boosters. The girls line a paw print stencil with chalk and then hand paint the paw print on the cement. The 2nd Avenue Project Performs at The Final Community Concert Season Event

The Ellwood City Community Stage closed its concert season this Saturday with The 2nd Avenue Project. The 2nd  Avenue Project is a horn band known for playing funk, rock and soul from Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The group played a variety of music Saturday night including songs like “Saturday in the Park” and “Make Me Smile” by Chicago. The group plays more than 45 concerts a year with the summer being its busiest time. Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel Announces Scholarships

Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel is starting a scholarship for students in both Ellwood City and Riverside School Districts to start. Vanessa Venezie, operations manager of Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel and the assistant girls varsity basketball coach for Lincoln High School, came up with the idea of starting a scholarship all while sitting at her brother Luca Botti’s graduation ceremony from LHS this past June. “While sitting at my brother’s graduation I realized there weren’t many scholarships for athletes who also excelled in the classroom,” Venezie said. “I remembered when I was in school there was a scholarship offered…


Ellwood City Throw Back Thursday: July 1981 Storm

Hello Everyone, last Friday we posted some photographs from a storm in the summer of July 1981. One of our viewers Hazel Beltz Ford, reached out to us and she was able to provide us with some more information and some more photographs of the storm. Expired Registration Leads to Court Summons

Ellwood City Police Department completed a traffic stop on Joseph Serjak for an expired registration on Aug. 4. Officers approached the vehicle and Serjak immediately stated he had a knife on his waist. Police advised Serjak to keep his hands on the wheel of the vehicle. Serjak was accompanied in the car by Jon Lamzena, both appeared nervous to officers. The officer observed track marks on Serjak’s arms and asked why his registration was expired. Yellow Ribbon Girls Carnival August 11

The Yellow Ribbon Girls, which are based out of Ellwood City, have a Carnival coming up on August 11 with proceeds to benefit the Yellow Ribbon Girls Care Package Postage Fund. The Yellow Ribbon Girls create and send monthly care packages to our troops deployed around the world. “We ship between 80- 90 packages each month,” Said Bonnie Phillippi, a founder of Ellwood City Yellow Ribbon Girls. “Our group depends on volunteers to donate their time to help sort and pack items. PHOTOS: Updates on Bridge Construction Around Ellwood City

Koppel Bridge Updates According to PennDOT:  The $27.58 million Route 351 Koppel Bridge replacement project continues in 2018 with steel erection, and pier and retaining wall construction to the bridge connecting Koppel Borough to North Sewickley Township over Beaver River. Traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge during the construction of the new bridge. An approximate three-month closure with detour will occur in the summer of 2019. Additional work includes signage, pavement markings, drainage, and guiderail installation. 2018 Holy Redeemer Bazaar

The Holy Redeemer Bazaar is returning for its 52nd annual event starting tomorrow Aug. 1 and concluding on Aug. 4 at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Third Street. Townspeople can’t wait for this annual event. The food, the fun and the fireworks make the Bazaar a favorite. The weekend-long Bazaar is hosted on the grounds of The Holy Redeemer Parish every summer. Featuring more than 50 vendor booths, carnival rides, entertainment and drawings for prizes. Council Votes 5-0 for New Interim Borough Manager

Ellwood City Council voted 5-0 on Thursday night to name a previous Borough Manager Joseph Cioffi, as the interim manager. Council members Rob Brough and Marilyn Mancini were absent from the special meeting. Cioffi, will be paid $30 per hour and will work a full-time shift from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Monday to Friday, starting next week. Since stepping down as manager, Cioffi has remained involved locally, serving for a time as parks and recreation director and as the playgrounds director, among other positions. New Mural Underway on the Fifth Street Underpass

Ellwood City Council gave permission last week to let the nonprofit Kitchen Cabinet group commission a local artist to paint murals on the north and south side facades of the Fifth Street underpass. Woodrow Cowher of Ellwood City, who recently completed the mural at Sweet Caroline’s ice cream shop on Lawrence Ave, began work this week. Officials hope to have the project completed by the end of summer. The project, which is funded through the Hoyt Foundation and also supported by Ellwood Community Enrichment, is expected to take about three weeks to complete.
