The Lady Wolverines withstood two furious comeback attempts by Freeport, finally advancing with a wild 14-11 victory over Freeport on Thursday.
Freeport rallied back from an 8-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead, and later answered an Ellwood City three-run seventh to force extra innings.
The game was tied at 11 with Wolverines batting in the top of the ninth when Natalia Greco singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, pressing the Wolverines back in front for good.
Greco led Wolverines to victory by driving in four runs. She went 3-for-6 at the plate. Greco drove in runs on a in the first, a double in the seventh, and a single in the ninth. Anna Ferrucci went 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs for Ellwood City (12-6),
Wolverines notched six runs in the second inning.
Freeport scored five runs in the sixth inning. Freeport batters contributing to the big inning included Emily Schmidt, Allison DeJidas, and Tori Radvan, all driving in runs in the inning.
Angie Nardone led the Wolverines to victory in the circle. She allowed 15 hits and 11 runs over nine innings, striking out nine.
Wolverines racked up 13 hits in the game. Ferrucci, Greco, Maria Ioanilli, and Nardone all had multiple hits for Wolverines.
Freeport collected 15 hits. Autumn Powell, DeJidas, Radvan, Natalie King, and Herbst each racked up multiple hits for Freeport.
Ellwood City advanced to play No. 2 South Allegheny (16-2) in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Monday at a site and time to be determined.
