Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Victorious In WPIAL Opening Rounds

The Riverside Panthers baseball team and the Ellwood City Wolverines softball team each earned opening round victories Tuesday.

#5 seeded Riverside knocked off Chartiers-Houston in the Class 2A first round while the #4 seed Wolverines defeated Beaver Falls in the WPIAL Class 3A softball playoffs first round.

Riverside Jumps Ahead Early, Holds On For Victory Over Chartiers-Houston

Riverside got out to a five-run lead in the third inning and held on for a 5-4 victory over Chartiers-Houston on Tuesday. Chartiers-Houston scored four runs in their comeback effort but fell short.

The Panthers fired up the offense in the first inning, when Mitch Garvin singled on a 3-2 count, scoring the game’s first run.

After tacking on another run in the second, Riverside notched three runs in the third inning with Darren McDade, Sammy Barber, and Hunter Garvin powering the big inning with RBIs.

Christian Lucarelli was on the hill for Riverside. The righty allowed two hits and two runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one.  Madden Boehm fanned six batters in his three and one-third innings of relief.

The Panthers totaled six hits on the afternoon with Garvin and Evan Burry collecting multiple hits for Riverside. Each swatted a double in the victory.

Parise was on the pitcher’s mound for Chartiers-Houston. The pitcher went two innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two. Ryan Opfer threw four innings in relief.  Jake Mele, Justus Buckingham, and Ryan Parise each picked up RBIs offensively for Chartiers-Houston.

Riverside will next play #4 seed Carmichaels on Thursday at 4:30 PM at Peterswood Park.  All higher seeds were victorious in the Class 2A opening round play. [VIEW FULL BRACKET]

Wolverines Take Opening Round Victory Over Beaver Falls

Ellwood City was victorious over Beaver falls 6-2 on Tuesday.

The Wolverines got things moving in the first inning behind a Kyla Servick solo homerun.  Ellwood City added four runs in the fifth inning. Mollie Street and Julie Nardone each had RBIs in the big inning. Nardone smashed a three-run homerun in the inning to help put the game out of reach.

Nardone was credited with the victory for the Wolverines. The pitcher tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and did not surrender an earned run. Nardone struck out seven and walked zero Tigers.

Ellwood City racked up seven hits on the day with Servick and Street each collecting two hits for the victors.

Ellwood City will next play #5 seed Southmoreland Thursday at 6:00 PM at North Allegheny High School. With a victory, the Wolverines may find itself with a rematch against top seed Avonworth who earned a first round bye and will play defending champion Mt. Pleasant on Thursday.
